This is the version sold in the US. The brewer’s original intent was for a beer of this strength but limitations proprietary to the Dutch market led to him brewing a lower alcohol, sweetened version there. When he started exporting to the US, the original concept of the beer was chosen.

A red-brown beer with no head. The aroma is lovely sour with a clear presence of vinegar. The flavor is also lovely sour - the sourness draw out the mouthwater toward a very dry end. Unfortunately the body is a little thin.

11.3oz Bottle Pours a VERY dark brown witha slight tan head that quickly dissapears leaving a small ring and thin spotty lacing. Aromas are sweet dark pitted fruit, raisons apples and figs. Flavors are similar but there is brown sufggar and a smokey, woody taste there too. Sweeter that the other few I’ve had of the style. Moderate carbonation and a very thin feel. Aftertaste is a slight acidic sweet taste. Interesting but I liked "the Duchesse" better. Thanks to Captain Cougar for this one.

Hazy cold, brown coloured body with a super-thin off-white head. Aroma of sour cherries, malt, caster sugar and some off scents. Light-bodied; Super tart cherry flavour with sweet sugars following behind. Aftertaste tart and crisp-odd, but its a full-bodied feeling. Overall, nice to try and a real treat from the Dutch. I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased at Whole Foods in Vienna, Virginia on 18-September-2004.

Pours a deep reddish auburn color with a medium beige head. Thin and quick lacing. The aroma is strong sour apple along with vinegar and spice. Medium-bodied and smooth with tart fruit (apple again), yeast and some malt tastes. Also a little bit of a Cabernet or Concorde grape wine flavor. The finish is fruity and earthy and maintains the sourness. I am still having trouble appreciating this style but I would probably try this again.

AOBF 04. Bottle. This one was my favorite sample at the festival. Pours a soft reddish-brown with some lighter tans and darker auburns. Aroma is very interesting, sweet and sour sauce meets balsamic vinegar meets caramel malt. A whiff of yeast on there as well, but not a huge amount of oak detectable yet. Flavor is immediately powerfully sweet, caramelly, sugary fruit esters, with an ever so subtle light vinegar sourness. Though it seems dominated by the sweetness, I really think the yeast (spicy, lightly sour) and oak did a good job of creating a nice subtle background. Unlike many sweet beers, the flavor was so true and good, the sweetness didnt bother me, and actually seemed to add a lot of character. I can see why so many think it’s so-so, maybe this one just worked really well when I tried it, but whatever the case, I really enjoyed this one. Oh ya, the mouthfeel was a big part of this, for an oak-aged sour ale, it sure had a soft, even, almost creamy texture. Yum
Rerate. Picked up another bottle to try recently. Very clear and filtered, with obvious pasteurisation. This one has a bit more sticky fruit, some tangy sour cherry flavor and something like strawberry-caramel flavors. I still really enoy the tart/sour flavors of this one and while, admittedly, it may not be the end all be all of flemish sours, it is still one of my personal favorites as far as the mid-tier, filtered flemish sours go. As always, I’d be immensely interested to try an unfiltered cask sample.
