This is the version sold in the US. The brewer’s original intent was for a beer of this strength but limitations proprietary to the Dutch market led to him brewing a lower alcohol, sweetened version there. When he started exporting to the US, the original concept of the beer was chosen.

Swing top bottle @ DTS. It is a shame Gulpen doesn’t any longer produce this brew. I have been wanting to try this beer for years: my patience was richly rewarded! Cream sherry, caramel, pear, porto in the aroma. The beer has thinned a bit but the flavor remains intense: cream sherry, balasamic vinegar and the last remains of oak. This beer has aged very gracefully. Almost perfect!!

Sampled draft @ Arendsnest during Carnivale Brettanomyces #4. Glad to try this very rare classic. Dark red pomegranate, little tanned head. Nose is mild puckering vinous, basic, lightly metallic with some vinegar, red grape & light glue. Taste is odd light sweetish jam upfront mixed with some vinegar, lemon, faintly artificial, lemon, malty, faintly metallic almost,… Tad artificial body, light jam. Not as rich as I had hoped, a bit too light, touch metallic & some tad too artificial jam qualities. This is good but I was hoping for much more. Still a good beer, I just had too high expectation, my bad. (Thanks for sharing Kermis, Maakun & tlahav).

On tap at Churchkey’s Night of the Living Ales event. Poured a ruby red color with a huge white head - had to wait for this one to settle down a bit. Aroma was slightly sweet, with a mild note of balsamic in there - perhaps that’s not the right description, but it’s what I hit upon when I had it at the time. Aroma was sweet, mild tartness, but overall mostly sweet. Fruit notes aren’t bad at all, perhaps also noticed a touch of smoke in this one too. Nice sweet brew, with fruity notes.

Granville Moore’s, DC tap ($13): Pours a brown with a nice head. Aroma is sugar, expensive candy, and vinegar. Taste is somewhat sour, but not extreme. Fortunately, it is not too subtle either. Somewhat sweet, but not too much. This is straight up oud bruin taste. I kind of wish the sourness and the maltiness were a little bit more intense, but this is still a very tasty brew.

Black cherry, oak, and faint chocolate hints on the nose, totally sour though. Garnet brown, medium tan head with good retention. Much sweeter than expected, tart cherries and shortbread cookies, musty. Hints of cranberry and apple core. Soft carbonation, low alcohol presence. Wow, if this is the unsweetened version, I don’t think I want the sweetened one. This isn’t cloying, but it isn’t very sour either. Elegant and complex, but if you’re looking for gueuze type sourness, you will disappointed.
