This is the version sold in the US. The brewer’s original intent was for a beer of this strength but limitations proprietary to the Dutch market led to him brewing a lower alcohol, sweetened version there. When he started exporting to the US, the original concept of the beer was chosen.

Draft at Churchkey. Dark maroon color. Aroma of subtle, smooth dilute coffee. Taste is an interesting sweet sour combo.

Reddish brown pour. Little head. The nose is like a merlot. Taste is very sour fermented fruit and a sweet malt finish. I loved this. Rated 9/23/04

Where the wild beers are; 2008. Considerable sourness. Brown/red appearance and low carbonation. Vinegar, balsamic, some sugar, fermenting fruit, and a little sweet malt. Lots of yeast. Quite sour. I am glad I got to try it before it disappeared.

Shared by Dickinsonbeer. A darker color more like oud bruin. Aroma is lightly sour, light roast, faintly acidic. In general light and lightly sweet. Taste is sweet cherry, very light, not much past that. It’s Dutch but the way I like to think about it is if the Germans made a Flanders Red, this would be it.

Danke an den Doppelbock für dieses Bier! Dezent saurer, leicht malziger Geruch. Harmonisch saurer Antrunk, später malzig herb ausgeglichen. Milder, nur leicht saurer Nachgeschmack. Süffiges Bier, auch hier ist eine leicht künstliche Süße zu erkennen. Komplexes Bier, nett! Test vom 12.8.2007, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 10,12,13,12,13,12 - 12,00

Pour is a deep ruby red with no head at all. Aroma is very interisting. Its sort of a winey almost vinegar aroma. Just the right amount of mustyness to leave you guessing. FLavor is a sour cherry with a woody backbone. Kinda weak flavor brings down the beers rating but it is still a very interestion brew. A bit more alcohol could help.

Bottled, rated “live.” Sitting up with the Oscars; seems to be the occasion for a more offbeat beer. Woof! Very sour whiff when I flip the top. Pours red-brown, with a nice foamy head. But with my first sip, the sourness has gone pretty much away. Nicely tart cherry taste with overtones of a sweet red wine. Pleasant wild yeast taste and impressions of wood come through midway. Then that horse blanket people sometimes talk about (dang! now I’m all melancholy cause they’re doing the montage of dead Hollywood folks, and there goes Chris Reeve... hey Superman and his father passed on!). So I get a beer that combines my favorite bits of brown ale and an unfiltered asti. And finally, a beer from the Netherlands that I can like!
