The beer is black with a smallish light brown head. Just a touch of brown at the edge of the glass. Smoke hits me first from the aroma. It was unexpected and while it doesn’t dominate the flavor, there’s a pretty good kick. Milk chocolatey stout. The lactose is evident. Vanilla, spice, mild oak from the barrels. Caramel, treacle, molasses. Lots of sweet stuff comes through once the initial smoke and booze blows off. The taste is surprisingly mild. It tastes every bit a big milk stout. Even the barrel flavor is relatively mild, adding more rye spice than anything. Lots of caramel and lots of chocolatey lacto sweetness. It drinks smaller than the abv. Fairly creamy feel. The beer just feels sorta weak somehow. Not much punch and not enough rich malt character. It’s not bad but it seems to rely too much on the lacto sweetness and ends up being a bit bland.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 3/17/2015. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense dark tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, dark bread, toasted oats, light nuttiness, vanilla, cream, bourbon, spicy rye, oak, light smoke/char, and roast/oaky earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, whiskey barrel, and lactose notes; with good strength. Taste of big milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, dark bread, toasted oats, light nuttiness, vanilla, cream, bourbon, spicy rye, oak, light smoke/char, and roast/oaky earthiness. Moderate whiskey/oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, dark bread, toasted oats, light nuttiness, vanilla, cream, bourbon, rye, oak, and roast/oaky earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, whiskey barrel, and lactose flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet and oak spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, moderately creamy, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic barrel aged imperial oatmeal milk stout. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balace of dark/roast/bready malts, whiskey barrel, and lactose flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the huge ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Pours black into a snifter. Mocha head with good retention recedes leaving trailing sheets. Sour vanilla, oak and burnt pumpernickel aromas. Thick with sweet vanilla and oak upfront turning to milk chocolate and bourbon in the warm, lasting finish.

Bomber from Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours inky brown/black with a creamy, slight, dark tan head. Aroma is amazing. Bacon? Probably not, but there’s a lot of aroma. I get whiskey, and I think there’s a rye tinge in it. But the aroma is so clean - whatever it is. Ok. Smooth burnt toast and whiskey. It’s what should be for breakfast. Full bodied. Flavor is whiskey, chocolate, bourbon and arguably rye, but how about some maple? Not to mention wood. This stuff is so strongly flavored it’s confusing. AKA complex. Really nice, and heat is like not really present!
