Bell's Brewery Sideyard Ale

Sideyard Ale

Bell's Brewery in Galesburg, Michigan, United States 🇺🇸

IPA - New England / Hazy Autumn
Score
7.50
ABV: 6.8% IBU: - Ticks: 6
An excellent example of what happens when two styles come together in the brewhouse: wet-hopped IPAs and New England IPAs. Brewed with hops harvested directly from the Bell’s estate, Sideyard is massively dry-hopped, aromatic, hazy and juicy. Sideyard is the definition of fresh.

16 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 9/20/2019. Pours opaquely hazy golden/amber/green color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big tangerine, orange juice, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, citrus peel/rind, wood, mint, peppercorn, pine, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/earthy hops and bready malt notes; with big strength. Taste of big tangerine, orange juice, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, citrus peel/rind, wood, mint, peppercorn, pine, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tangerine, orange juice, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, citrus peel/rind, wood, mint, peppercorn, pine, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/earthy hops and bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and minimal lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy, and sticky/resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 6.8%, with mild lingering hop burn after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic wet hopped NEIPA. All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/earthy hops and bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the modestly bitter/resinous/drying finish. Nicely soft and not overly aggressive. Fantastic fresh Chinook hop showcase. Extremely vibrant, dank, earthy, and fairly juicy hops; with a nice sized wheat/oat/malt backbone. Mild residual sweetness with lingering resin dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and impressively well made style example as expected. Would have preferred some new world hops in there, but they nailed what they were going for with the style.

Draft at The Eccentric Cafe, Kalamazoo. Murky yellow-brown body, thin off-white head. Nose of tropical fruit/fruit juice and a touch of peach. Creamy body, a little dry, with tropical fruit (papaya) and stone fruit. A heftier New England IPA than their sessionable Official, and a delicious beer.

16 oz can. Pours a very murky light yellow with a white head. Aroma has grapefruit and orange citrus, occasionally hinting at tropical fruits and pine. Flavor again juicy grapefruit and orange citrus, again pine suggestions, perhaps some toasty biscuit toward the finish. Overall good flavor, but could stand to be a little stronger.

Can from Holiday Market. Pours a super hazy, juicy gold color with a finger of white foam that lingers...then dissipates. Big pungent, hop-forward nose with citrus pith, pineapple, dank and light mint aromas. Juicy on the palate with nice carbonation underneath. Lingering pith and faint pine notes. Dank, juicy and with nice medium prickly pear bitterness on the finish. Great drop from Bell's.
