The unsung heroes, the foot soldiers of the revolution. We owe a huge debt to the billions of tiny yeast cells that work tirelessly to ferment sugars into alcohol and CO2. But yeast isn’t just here for the grunt work. Yeast has the power to change the flavour, aroma and complexion of your beer in an instant.

This series is designed to showcase the impact different yeasts have on the same base beer. This series of 4 beers gives the limelight to four totally different yeast strains: Belgian Trappist, Pilsen Lager, American Ale and Bavarian Weizen. All 4 beers have been brewed to the same ABV using a blend of Centennial and Amarillo hops and a backbone of Pale Ale, Munich and Cara Malts.

Malts: Maris Otter, Crystal Malt, Caramalt
Hops: Centennial, Amarillo

330ml bottle, batch 243, from Vinmonopolet Bestillingsutvalget. Shared with Finn. Near-clear golden-brown body. Hazy last pour. Average off-white head, slowly diminishing leaving spotty lacing to the glass. Wheat fruity nose, lots a fresh peaches. Succulent taste of orange and peach, lightly spices. Mild citrus peels to the ending. Fine bodied. Refreshing and thirst quenching (Tromsø 08.04.2015).

Flaske 330ml spandert av Rune og delt med ham på Rundvannet 8 Apr 15. Gyldenbrun. Småpartikler. Middels høyt skum med ørlite farge. God fruktaroma. Mest mandarin. Smaken er syrlig frukt. Grapefrukt dominerer. Balansert. Avslutter tørt. Veldig uklar siste kvelling. Mye sedimenter igjen på flaska. Godt øl!

Bottled. ORangeish golden colour with a mediumsized creamy white head. Aroma clashes to a spicy fruitiness with some grassy ntoes as well. Flavour is toffee, spices, citrus, grass and some herbs. The bitterness and yeast isn’t the best combination...

The second beer tasted from this series and side by side with the three others. Shows a somewhat better head retention and deeper orange to amberish colour than the others. Aroma and taste indeed reflect the classic banana- and clove-like flavours we are used to from Hefeweizen, but is less strong and less perfumey than the American Ale version; this came out as the second best of the series to me. In terms of style: let’s be serious here, this is not a Hefeweizen at all, this is an American pale ale fermented with Hefeweizen yeast, but with the same long, dry, perfumey and citrussy hoppiness in the finish as most other APAs.
