Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, many say, and if you are a beer geek there is no better way to start the day than with a powerful, complex morning stout.

This is the beer that started it all for Mikkeller. Oatmeal Stout brewed with coffee and seven different kind of malt (Pils, Oat, Smoked, Caramunich, Brown, Pale Chocolate, Chocolate), roasted barley, oat flakes, hops (Centennial, Cascade), American ale yeast and gourmet coffee. Aroma is a combination of malts, caramel, chocolate and coffee. The body is medium with light coffee and chocolate flavors with a creamy texture, average carbonation and a bitter edge on the finish. A beer that goes extremely well with breakfast.

Tap at Mikkeller Bangkok. Poured a clear dark mahogany with a frothy tan head. The aroma is dry smoky roasted malt. The flavour is moderate to strong bitter with a big roasty liqourice coffee alcoholic bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Didn’t really get the chocolate at all, just lots of roasty liqourice bitter.

BOTTLE 33CL. Starts with a huge cold cofeee aroma, very roasty, chocolate, aniseed and a touch of alcohol. The coffee gradually goes away, leaving room for sweeter aroma - chocolate, coffee liquor. The taste is also full of coffee and chocolate, but still is more straight forward that he aroma. Some citrus hops in the finish. Medium body.

(330ml bottle @ Pitcher’s, Linköping, Nov 11 2014) Pours black with basically no head. Great nose of dark malts, toasted or lightly burnt wood (not ashy), medium/dark roast coffee, some dark chocolate with hints of sweetness, soy is light but detectable. On the palate, cold pressed coffee, a little raw cane sugar sweetness at first, quickly fades. Some dry dark chocolate joins the coffee in the middle, a bit of dark malt character. Roast quite present from both coffee and malt, but it is not overpoweringly burnt, just nice and dry. Oat character helps support that dryness from the middle on. Lightly woody, but not in the barrel sense. Medium-full slick body with light prickly carb. Long finish of coffee and roast, dry with no booze. I really love the dry, smooth coffee-driven character of this beer, so rich and flavourful but nowhere close to cloying and sweet. Perfect for breakfast!

330 ml bottle. Pours black with moderate tan head. Aromas of creamy coffee, coconut, chicory, and roasted malts. Flavors are rich and similar with additional dry dark chocolate. Smooth and dry. Really defines this type of Scandanavian Stout.

Bottle. Pours opaque brownish black with small brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, soy sauce, mint, orange, grapefruit, dried flowers, hints ammonium chloride. Taste is medium bitter, medium sweet and light acidic. Body is creamy with medium-soft carbonation. Finish is long and medium bitter sweet with notes of malt, brown sugar, sweet licorice, dark dried fruits (prunes, dates, raisins), oat meal and soy sauce. Very rich and well balanced, but I didn’t find the coffee?!

330ml bottle. Label says brewed and bottled at Lervig Aktiebryggeri, Norway. Opaque black color with a small bubbly tan head that dissipates quickly. Rich espresso-like roasted malt nose has hints of tobacco and burnt wood. Intense roasted malt flavor with more espresso coffee and charred wood. Silky and bitter with slight oat notes and minimal carbonation. As oatmeal stouts go, this is dry and bitter with big coffee flavor. Hops come in late in finish. This is special. Hard to find and pricy at $8.00 for a 330 ml bottle.
