Originally a Wild Dog release commemorating our 10th anniversary. Double Dog Double Pale Ale became here to stay in 2009. Could you control such a beast?

This is a big beer that calls for equally big foods. Flavor notes: Citrus hops with sweet malt and subtle alcohol burn (like a kiss on the cheek) Pairs with: Extra sharp aged Cheddar and stinky Blue cheese; smoked brisket; spicy foods with chili or cayenne pepper; earthy desserts like carrot cake.

bottle from Bierzwerg. Amber-golden colour, large and persistent off-white head. Malty-hopy nose. Full-bodied, malty base wit caramel and nuts, also dried fruits. Rounded off with a lot of bitter and aromatic hops, resulting in a bitter-sweet character. A warming touch of alcohol is present in the lingering bitter finish, which leaves a slightly burning mouthfeel.

Bottle from Melger’s Wijn-en Drankenhandel, Haarlem, drunk on the ferry back from Holland. Reddy orange pour with a slight haze and a small white head. Big hoppy snout with some berry and citrus notes. Caramel malts, in your face grassy hop bitterness, fruits and booze predominating in the flavour which had a decent balance to it. Sweetish bitter finish. Another winner from the Flying Dog stable.

12 oz bottle. Aroma is peppery, sprucey, many more aromas I can’t quite identify; complex. Pours orange with a medium head and decent lacing that sticks to the glass to the end. Heavy brew. Extremely bitter. Strong malty aftertaste. Medium carbonation. Definitely a quality beer, but I don’t think I could drink more than a couple of these.

On tap at Esbjerg Beerfestival. A hazy, golden beer with a small off-white head leaving some lacings. Syrupy nose with lots of resin, some citrus and fruits. A bit one-dimensional maybe, but far from bad. Citrusy, resiny flavor with syrupy-sweet malts in the back. A bit too warming. Full-bodied and astringently bitter. Very bitter in the finish. A nice beer indeed, but a bit too much I think. Seems to be made to be provocative, ignoring the drinkability and balance. Rating. 7-3-7-4-15-3.6. 091022

Bottle. It pours a hazy, dark golden body with some sediments and a lively carbonation. A small, off-white head sits on top. Citrus and resin starts the ball aroma-wise, soon followed by caramel sweetness and some beefstock. A whiff of alcohol blends in. Full-bodied and warming with a good resiny flavor. Caramel malts and beef-stock as a base, and a good bitterness building up towards the finish. Some alcohol burn. There’s also a int of dried fruits here, and a slight cellar touch. The latter probably due to it’s two and a half years lost in my cellar. Maybe a tad sweet, but definately a nice beer, even though it’s far from elegant. 100225

Bottle. Pours deep orange with a small white head. Fruity aroma with hops. Also some caramel, citrus and biscuits. Taste was similar, aftertaste was very bitter. Quite heavy body. Easy to drink despite the high alcohol content.

Tap at Ginger Man, NYC. Pours a deep, glowing orange with a fine white head. Nose is heavy on the hops, piney and ctirusy. Flavor follows along those lines, with some caramel, malty sweetness and hints of candy and dark fruits like raisins and figs. Medium bodied and pretty alcholic, the beer feels quite nice, what with the warming sensations. Very solid.

Bottle. Poured a clear amber with an off-white head. Aroma was full of hops, mainly a grapefruit notes, with an undertone of grain from the malt. Flavor was full of hops, first grape fruit and then pine.
