As Game of Thrones approaches its final season, Brewery Ommegang and HBO Global Licensing are excited to announce the launch of the Royal Reserve Collection, a collectible series of four special, limited release beers, each designed and brewed as an homage to one of four epic figures in the battle for the Seven Kingdoms. Packaged as a series, with simple, elegant iconography and sophisticated design representative of select Westerosi houses, each beer will be brewed and blended with ingredients selected to match the character and temperament of the chosen hero, designed and brewed as Brewery Ommegang’s interpretation of what a royal brewer might brew for his or her noble master.
The first beer in the series is Hand of the Queen, a beer brewed for Tyrion Lannister. As one who knows a great many things, Tyrion knows and loves wine above all else, so Hand of the Queen is a big, bold barleywine, a beer fit for those who seek knowledge and truth, both great and small.

750 ml bottle from Albertsons. Ruddy brown pour with huge Rocky head. Big heady malt aroma, raisins, molasses. Taste is more malty goodness, woody, mild sweetness, latent heat. Not outstanding, but a pretty solid barleywine.

Sampled on draft at Tapped this beer poured a red-brown color with a huge foamy beige head that left decent lacing. The aroma was cherry, raisin, tobacco, bread, wood, alcohol, pine and pineapple. Long finish. Moderately full bodied. Solid but I hoped for better.

Capped 750 from Bine & Vine. Pours dark and ruddy - translucent. Huge foamy/frothy beige head. Aroma is earthy brown sugar. Med + body. Flavor is light treacle, leather, brown sugar, slightly dark fruits. Wood. Drier than it might have been; not really bitter. There's a toffee character suggesting bitter. Weird that. I'd vote it as an English barley wine. I'm really lik'n it.

Draught @ Solid State. Clear reddish brown with small frothy beige head, faint caramel aroma, medium carbonation, medium bitter caramel malt taste, thin body, long bitter finish. Not terribly exciting.

750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled on 2/19/2018. Pours slightly hazy deep reddish copper color with a 2 finger fairly dense and rocky light khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big orange, lemon, grapefruit, golden raisin, peach, pear, plum, fig, apricot, red apple, red grape, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, and toasted biscuit; with light notes of nuttiness, roast, pepper, pine, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity yeast, citrus/earthy hops, and dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big orange, lemon, grapefruit, golden raisin, peach, pear, plum, fig, apricot, red apple, red grape, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, and toasted biscuit; with light notes of nuttiness, roast, pepper, pine, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light pine, herbal, grassy, spicy hop bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of orange, lemon, grapefruit, golden raisin, peach, pear, plum, fig, apricot, red apple, red grape, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/roast, herbal, floral, grassy, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity yeast, citrus/earthy hops, and dark/bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden; a mildly increasing warmth of 10.7% after the finish. Overall this is an awesome English barleywine! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity yeast, citrus/earthy hops, and dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV. Extremely rich with awesome balance between citrus/earthy hops, fruity yeast, and dark/bready English malt complexity. Not overly hoppy or bitter, just the right amount. A really enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

Was going to save this for #4000, but I don't have that kind of control. Bomber, Wine Warehouse. Pours murky ruby-brown with a huge soft beige head. Aroma is sweet red and dark fruit, yeast, bubblegum, caramel, hint of chocolate. Flavor is dark cherry, caramel, chocolate, cocoa, roasted nuts, bitter brown leaves, alcohol, resin. Very nice way to start the weekend.
