As Game of Thrones approaches its final season, Brewery Ommegang and HBO Global Licensing are excited to announce the launch of the Royal Reserve Collection, a collectible series of four special, limited release beers, each designed and brewed as an homage to one of four epic figures in the battle for the Seven Kingdoms. Packaged as a series, with simple, elegant iconography and sophisticated design representative of select Westerosi houses, each beer will be brewed and blended with ingredients selected to match the character and temperament of the chosen hero, designed and brewed as Brewery Ommegang’s interpretation of what a royal brewer might brew for his or her noble master.
The first beer in the series is Hand of the Queen, a beer brewed for Tyrion Lannister. As one who knows a great many things, Tyrion knows and loves wine above all else, so Hand of the Queen is a big, bold barleywine, a beer fit for those who seek knowledge and truth, both great and small.

Bottle from Craft Beer Cellar, New Orleans. Aroma is brown malts, lots of caramel, toffee, touch of fudge, dried fruits, raisins, brown sugar, nuts, hint of cocoa. Flavour is sweet with a mild bitterness. Body is medium to full. Good specimen of (English) Barley Wine, very rich malt profile with plenty of dried fruits. Dig the fudge and cocoa hints. Worthy of The Hand.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a pretty nice, lighter caramel and toffee coloured base along with an amber glow and a fairly thick, three to four centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of alcohol, pitted fruits, caramel, toffee, apricots, caster sugar, treacle, golden raisins and a dash of pure yeast, but very strong throughout with the malt very evident. Full-bodied; Very rich malt flavours shine through everything with a lot of body to get past, but the sugars here are strong as well and provide a good balance with the earthiness and strong yeast notes. Aftertaste is rich throughout with alcohol, pitted fruits, residual sugars, yeast, bread and some slight rustic notes here, with the alcohol noticeable, but perhaps a bit less than expected (still strong). Overall, a nice and robust beer with a ton of flavours, a good layer of yeast and breadiness, but the malt is strong, as are the sugars, with a complexity from the grainy, nutty and rustic flavours, but good throughout. Overall, an enjoyable beer that hits nicely and perhaps would be better after even more time, but this still worked out nicely, and despite the punch of the ABV, was well-received. I sampled this 75 cL bottle, purchased from Costco in Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia on 18-April-2018 for US$8,99 sampled at my house here in Washington, as I hosted my family for Christmas, on 25-December-2021.

Pours deep amber. It smells malty with toffee, dark fruit, and spicy yeast. The intense flavor is sweet but there's enough hops balance to keep it from being too sweet. The Belgian yeast adds a nice touch. Quite tasty.

Thanks to AleRider78 for the share. Deep amber colour with purple highlights, a frothy mocha-coloured head, creamy lacing and particles everywhere. Sweet malt aromas with burnt ones that gives hints of smokiness, with nicely blended dark fruits. Smooth silky mouthfeel with a nice bitter finish. Dark fruit taste with some good hops. Seems to get more and more bitter, dry as it goes. A very nice and smooth barleywine with more hoppiness for the style.

Pours clear mahogany into a tulip. Off-white head with excellent retention recedes to coat surface. Sweet caramel aromas. Medium bodied with clove and hot caramel upfront turning to bitter earth in the lasting finish.
