Hapkin is a strong blond top-fermented beer that is refermented in the bottle. The floral touch of Saazhop and the spicy hop variety Monroe determine this rich blond beer. Originally from Louwaege Brewery (Kortemark), brewed from 2001 to 2007 at Brasserie Union (Jumet), then at Alken-Maes (Alken).

The name refers to Count Baudouin VII of Flanders (1093-1119), nicknamed “Hapkin” or “with the ax”. 900 years ago he is said to have commissioned the monks of Ten Duinen Abbey (near Koksijde) to brew a strong blond beer that would make him and his men invincible.

Bottle. Pours golden with a big foamy lingering head. Yeasty, hoppy aroma with hint of caramel. Full bodied flavour, malt and hops nicely balanced with hint of honey. Dryish finish. Masks the 8.5% alcohol very well.

Bottle. Sweet peach and grassy hops aroma. Hazy orange amber color with giant white head. Smooth creamy malt up front followed by a strong grassy hops flavor. Has a metallic and sour milk finish that’s a bit unpleasant.

(Bottle, Stockholm beer Festival, 22 Sep 2007) Golden yellow colour, slightly hazy, with white head. Fruity, spicy nose with notes of peaches and floral hops. Fruity, spicy taste with apricots, tropical fruit and floral hops in the finish. Rather sweet, turns drier towards the end. Medium body. Not a lot of surprises, but a decent belgian ale.
