Dark red-brown colour (EBC 75). A firm creamy and cream-coloured head. The smell of roasted malt, caramel and the sweet fruitiness of the alcohol give this beer the perfect aroma. Flavour: Caramel, sweet fruitiness and a pleasant bitterness are the predominant flavours. The aftertaste reveals a pinch of coffee and date.

Bottle as "Villers Oud Vieille" @ home, shared with Dutchdrebus. Dark red / brown color, decent sized off-white head. Sweet and malty smell. Tastes about the same: malts and sweetness, nothing more. Decent carbo, medium body.

Bouteille 33cl.

Bottle from Asao. Bit chocolate and fruit nose, caramel, dried plums and raisins. Nice and chewy. Very dark brown with a bit of orange and a low, super fine head. Fruity, caramel and chocolate flavor, quite sweet, but with a sour edge to it. Is it really an oud bruin? Lots of fresh fruit like cherry, plus a bit of dried plums. Nice enough, though a bit too much cheap sweetness. The nose alone was better!

I cannot fault the appearance: it has a huge head in a chalice and a dark brown body. The aroma is soft barley and a whole lot of malt. The taste is dark syrup, heavy alcohol and sugar-induced barley, a bit of a mess and unfortunate at that. Yet, still drinkable in all its fake glory. I think it’s a good Belgian ale, but certainly not a great one.

Big brown coarseish head. Hazy opaque brown body is just barely translucent red. Spicy papery caramel aroma with milky licorice and chocolate notes. Vinegary-acidic and sweet spicy chocolate taste with peppery notes. Thin body. Fizzy mouthfeel. Dry watery peppery chocolate aftertaste fades very quickly. Infected? Or just a failure? Hard to say. Must rerate. (0.33l bottle, de Biertempel, Brugge.)
