Draught at Haymaker, 3/17/17.
Dark cocoa-to-ebony brown/black body shows magenta highlights and light clarity. Cocoa-tan head atop is small and fades steadily to cover.
Lime and coconut are wrapped about dusty cocoa, light raisin and tons of bittersweet chocolate with lingering caramel. The lime actually helps balance with its dry, acidic character and the coconut isn’t overdone, though it’s easy to find. Obviously neither of these things add anything to a traditional schwarzbier, but taken as just an American adjunct black lager, it works well enough.
In the mouth it’s light with dusty cocoa and only light caramel and treacle with low sweetness. Soft, somewhat slick at times texture with low, engaging carbonation and lime-like juice and acidity on the finish. Coconut intersparsed gently throughout with more dusty cocoa lingering, as well. Interesting and the fact that it’s very drinkable is impressive. I don’t know that I’d go out and have another one, but if you showed me this on paper, I’d laugh and be disgusted. As is, this is far from disgusting.

Draught @ Milk and Hops. Opaque dark brown with large foamy beige head, faint citrus aroma, high carbonation, bitter roasted malt taste with scant citrus flavor, thin body, long burnt malt finish. Not sure where the coconut was.
