This Farmhouse Ale traces its roots to the small rustic breweries of Southern Belgium. The word Saison comes to us from the French language and it means Season. Lightly spiced with organic ginger, orange peels, black pepper and grains of paradise, this brew promises to quench your thirst on the hottest Southern California days or wherever your travels may take you. Available in 750 ml bottles and on draft at select inspired locations.

The Red Barn Story
Be it a river, a brook or a stream, there is something so incredibly soothing about the sound of water moving peacefully with the land it cuts through. You stop and watch as fish of all sizes dart in and out from the banks foraging for food. SMACK, a small trout plucks another water bug from the surface causing the rest of the insects lounging in the placid pools to take flight.

A boy, looking very much like you at 10 years old, settles in along the bank near his favorite fishing hole. Dressed in tattered jeans, a checkered shirt and straw hat, he is instantly your own personal Huck Finn. He baits a hook as a worm squirms away not realizing the fate bestowed upon him this day. You watch Huck settle into the grass knowing there is nothing to do but sit and wait. This simple scene confirms in your mind that this is a brook full of life and you set out on the path revealing its edges.

Along the way, a whispering easterly wind begins dancing in harmony with the overgrown grass in a shady grove. Breathing in a ballet of choreographed movement, nature rehearses. The brook rambles along pausing only at a small waterfall. Crystal blue water cascades in a soothing chorus while no one stops to notice the beauty to behold. For too many, this is nothing more than simple farm land.

Off in the distance, a Red Barn hides out content to do nothing more than was asked of it. Another summer day stretches out towards the crisp autumn nights and soon, work will begin on another harvest. The barn relaxes knowing full well that for each and every season, it will remain unmoved- yet touched by everything that nature has to offer. And we’re left to wonder, does anyone notice or even care to stop and appreciate the beauty of the Red Barn?

0,75l bottle at home shared by Powy, big thanks. No BB date. yellow rather hazy color, quite big white head. smells flowery, ginger, peppery, spices, honey, very nice smell. full body, soft carbonation, slick mouthfeel. tastes ginger, peppery, spices, flowery, light honey, grassy, light chlorophyl. finishes medium bitter with notes of ginger, grass and peppery notes. nice one but also a bit strong on the ginger / peppery / grassy side. overall quite nice though.

From Oct 2006

Poured from caged and corked 750ml bottle(room temp) a cloudy reddish gold with a large head of foam that grew as it was sitting in my New Belgium goblet. It took several minutes for the foam to settle down but once it did, I was left with a solid layer with lots of lacing hugging my glass. Very very nice.

The smell was dominated by strong citrus and yeasty notes which made for a good nose.

The taste is surprisingly sweet up front. I note sweet malt but not really caramelly sweet, followed by a good dose of spice and fruit with a healthy portion of funk that offsets the sweetness nicely. Further in to the bottle, the fruit really asserts itself with nice apricot and fig flavours mixed in with hints of banana and clove. There's a *lot* of complexity in this Saison and as it warms up(even from room temp) the various flavours just keep getting better and better at least..to my palate. Wow. This is one heck of a brew!

I've now poured the last bit in my glass and it's: cloudier than ever due to the natural sediment and..the malt profile is probably at its zenith because I'm tasting a sweet malty goodness that's actually more pronounced than my first sips but....it's more balanced and tastier because the fruit and funk are there to "guide" it. Again. Wow....what a brew!

Bottom line Part 2: This is an outstanding Saison. I dare say, the best I've ever tasted!

Bottom line: This is a *wonderful* Saison from yet another small brewery in California.

0,75l bottle from Beergium. Clear, orange golden beer with huge cloudy white head. Aroma has grain, light malts, sweet fruits and light sour and spicy feeling. Taste has sweet light malts, fruits, grass, sourness and spicies. Dry and bitter aftertaste with pepper. Fresh, beautiful and interesting beer, which turns onto too bitter and sour end.

Bottle. Deep gold with a large white head that lasts OK. Aroma of crackery dough, oranges, cloves. Medium bodied, high carbonation. Quite yeasty and quite bitter with a rush to the fairly spicy and dry finish. Some chives there too unfortunately. And - weirdly - a hint of booze. As it warms to about 12C mildly fruity (oranges, apricots) and doughy sweetness come through more and it seems more agreeable.

Delicious saison with added ginger. One of my favorite types of beer, can really taste the effort put into it.
