The gnomes of Fairyland are particularly fond of this golden beer. LA CHOUFFE, with its slight hoppy taste, combining notes of fresh coriander and fruity tones, is the drink which gives them their zest for life. At least, that's what these imps say when they are thirsty. Their secret used to be jealously guarded from one generation to the next until the day they shared the recipe with humans to seal their friendship. Of all the legends from the wonderful region of the Belgian Ardennes, the tale of LA CHOUFFE is the one which most merits re-telling.

Bottle from Belgiuminabox. Pours a hazy golden/amber colour with a medium sized off white head. Nice lacing. Aromas of lemon, coriander, hops, spice, pepper, pears, peaches and faint bubblegum. Taste is spicy, peppery and tangy with the same notes as the aroma with more lemon and coriander. Sparkly champagne like mouthfeel. Has a very slight sweet finish but very nicely balanced. Alcohol is very well hidden. Quite unique and refreshing. Very good.

0.33 l bottle from Goblet Beer Store, Zagreb. Thanks Van Damec, shared with her and Vran. Clear golden, small off-white head. Aroma is coriander first, lemony, then yeasty aromas, fruity esters, rose, quince, apricot. Slightly funky. Metal, slightly harsh phenols at first. Dry. Light hops emerge. Strong. Warming. Medium body. Flavour is malty, fruity, apple, pleasant.

Drinking Belgian beer and reading about it, a nice way to pass a typhoon night. McChouffe Brown 8% Deep brown with a dense light beige head that lasts and gives off a malty fruity aroma with peppery notes at the edge. Full bodied but dry and finishing light. The taste is sweet fruity molasses but doesn’t have as much depth as I expected from the aroma. Tasty and it hits the spot.
