Ideal for the Lager drinker who prefers amber beers, the "Scratch" is a smooth, malt-accentuated lager. Brewed in the "Steam-Style" tradition, scratch is a so-called hybrid beer that is fermented at medium temperatures to develop some ale and lager characteristics.

Bottle 355ml from Alko in Hätta, Finland. Pours dark amber colour, yellowish head. Aroma of spice and malt. Hops and coffee, with a tobacco finish. Too dry and not too interesting. Looks better than it tastes: a really stylish label. (Beer session Tromsø 29.apr.09)

Bottle bought at Alko. It had a nice amber-like color, the head was quite small. Not too advanced, but with a solid, rather sweet malt flavor balanced by hops. A decent bitterness, the body was medium.

35.5cl bottle; Slightly unclear, dark amber to brown colour with a short and tanned creamy layer. Moderately sweet and toasted malty nose with toffee, licquorice and herbal, also slightly woody hops. Light-bitter flavour, medium to light bodied with a moderate carbonation. Toasty malty base with aromatic notes of caramel and liquorice, accompanied by a blend of herbal hops and very subtle fruity notes lying underneath; toasty malty and moderately hop bitter finish. Good. 13.I.09

Very decent. Had it on tap at the Manchester Pub in NYC. Poured a deep amber-red with a medium, clean white head. Aroma of roasted malts and some fruit. Tasted sweet and malty with just a touch of bitterness. Finished smooth with a clean, crisp aftertaste.

Bottle. Clear dark amber body with a small, off-white head. Strong malty caramel aroma with notes of husky grain and grass. The flavor is lightly to moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body with a syrupy texture and somewhat soft carbonation. Seemed to be lacking the lager characteristics Flying Dog says it has. That aside, it was a nice-enough drinker.

12 oz. bottle, loose rack at Sam;s. Pours your basic amber color, but there’s a bit of lightness to it. This layer of small bubbles. Nondescript smell. Taste has some amber style maltiness, a hint of caramel, and a bit of fruity ester. I catch just a little bit of spice expected from a Steam beer, but nothing close to my impressions of an Anchor. It’s okay, though, a good session beer, even a good gateway craft beer. I’m just finding that Flying Dog doesn’t hit a homer every time.

Bottle: Amber coloured, a bit unclear with a small, but lacy off-white layer; distinctive nutty, toasty nose over a light fruity and hoppy background; moderate sweet-bitter flavour, light to medium bodied; moderate nutty-fruity finish with a light bitterness. Quite a pleasant brew.........
