29/9/2019. Can courtesy of Painy's travels, cheers! Pours clear mid-brown with a lasting creamy off-white to beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, caramel, dark fruits and a hint of chocolate and late developing liquorice. Medium to medium plus sweetness and light bitterness. Moderate body, slight oily texture, above average carbonation. Slight smoky notes develop. Compares pretty well to Eastern European brewed beers of this style.

A dark brown beer with a thin brown head. In aroma, sweet chocolate malt with light caramel notes, light vanilla, OK. In mouth, decent chocolate malt with light roasted notes, light caramel, not too bad for commercial stuff. Can from a halong ferry terminal store.

330mL can, pours a red-tinged dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma brings out toasted nuts, toasted malt and a hint of caramel. Flavour is on the herbal and skunky side, with toasted malt and nuts, herbal notes, some skunk and bready notes. Too herbal and lacking oomph. Not impressive.

355ml can as DaiViet Black (barcode is the same) with 5.8% ABV. Pours dark brown with a medium beige head. Aroma is cocoa powder and caramel. Taste is pale lagery with some caramel and weak roasted malt. Stands out among the many average and below average lagers.

From a can. It said that this should be the only dark beer in Vietnam. Pours brownish, not much foam. Not much aroma to speak about, soft and sweetish caramel. Taste is also similarly simple, actually not bad but drinks very smooth, has none of roast bitterness or any other flavours I usually associate with dark beers. I guess that I could enjoy this more in hot climate, maybe in Vietnam?
