La Folie, French for "the folly," is a beer steeped in New Belgium brewing tradition. This wood-aged, sour brown spends one to three years in big oak barrels known as foeders. And when the beer finally hits the glass, La Folie is sharp and sour, full of green apple, cherry, and plum-skin notes. 0.65l bottle shared with The Tasting Crew, from trade with ig88b. Huge thanks man! In the glass this is a cloudy looking dark rust brown colored one. It also has a nice slowly fading beige lacing head on the top. It has this surprisingly fruity nose this! Almost a little sweet, but still tart. Yeah, this is one good smelling nose. Lots of berries, blackberries, grass, some brown sugar and hints of lingon berries. Really nice! Tastes even better. It's definitely sour, slightly woody. Lemon stingy, lots of red berries. Wonderful in the mouth with a near smooth mouthfeel and a just above average carbonation level. Zingy without being to much. Well balanced. Almost a little okay in a way. Sorrel and lemons. This is superbly drinkable. A wonderful beverage. 08.10.2014

A more subdued, woody, earthy version of Le Terroir. Murky brown with a skin of creamy head that clings to the glass. Aroma more of darker dried fruits and milder tartness . Excellent companion to Le Terroir . Ying and yang. ’14 and ’16 rated.

Bomber courtesy of tkrjukoff. Pours hazy amberish brown with a frothy brownish beige head that leaves some sticky lacing on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sweet, sour, slightly malty and tiny fruity with sweet dark bread, caramel, lemon juice, grape juice, moist wood, moist hay, raisins, red wine vinegar, barnyard and lemon zest. Taste is sour and tiny malty with dark bread, toasted cereal, lemon juice, red wine vinegar, moist soil, leather, barnyard, raisins, cocoa powder and lemon zest. Mouthfeel is slightly dry, tart, slightly mouth-puckering and medium. Finish is sour and tiny malty with dark bread, lemon juice, red wine vinegar, moist hay, moist soil, leather, barnyard and lemon zest. Solid sour brown.

22 ounce bottle into signature globe glass; 2013 vintage, bottled 12/2/2012. Pours crystal clear dark ruby red color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big sour cherry, cranberry, green apple, raisin, plum, red wine vinegar, caramel, brown bread, hay, straw, grass, leather, toasted oak, musty funk, and yeast earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great complexity and balance of fruity/funky/lactic yeast, dark malt, and oak notes; with good strength. Taste of sour cherry, green apple, cranberry, raisin, plum, red wine vinegar, caramel, brown bread, hay, straw, grass, leather, toasted oak, musty funk, and yeast earthiness. Good amount of fruity/earthy tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of sour cherry, green apple, cranberry, raisin, plum, red wine vinegar, hay, straw, grass, leather, toasted oak, musty funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and balance of fruity/funky/lactic yeast, dark malt, and oak barrel flavors; with an awesome malt/acidity balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and moderately acidic mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding Flanders brown ale. All around awesome complexity and balance of fruity/funky/lactic yeast, dark malt, and oak barrel flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink even with the moderate acidity. A highly enjoyable offering.

Dark amber color, hazy, with compact head. The aroma is a bit sour and fruity, but nice. The mouthfeel is dry and violently acidic, lemony, with traces of red grapes, raspberry, vinegar.
Too much sourness, and I can’t find elegance in this one.

650 ml bottle. Pours a very dark mahogany with very little head. Aromas of wet wood, sugary raisins, tobacco, and vinegar. Flavors of sour cherries, brown sugar, balsamic vinegar, and citrus. Quite smooth for a sour though more of an Oud Bruin than a standard Rodenbach.

On tap at Harry’s Hofbrau. Sour cherry and earthen aromas. Clear reddish brown with a light tan head and moderate low lacing. Head remains only as a collar. Crisp, sour cherry. Puckering dryness.

I bought this beer for $8.99 at the Breeze In, valley location, Juneau Alaska.
I poured this into a tulip.
The appearance was a nice dark brown color with some ever so slight ruby to red edges. The head was less than a half a finger with a solid clingy white lacing sticking mighty finely to the sides of the glass.
The smell was a decent sour to tart fruity aroma indicating amounts of apples and peaches with a decent woody edge to it. There is a nice earthiness coming out as well.
The taste is sour leading with the peaches and apples taking over a nice tart background. The aftertaste is soured peaches and apples to end up leading into a dry sour and tart finish.
On the palate, it sits about a medium on the body. The quality of sessionability is somewhat there as I see its a 7% beer noted on the bottle. The carbonation for this one, hmmm....well, its actually somewhat smooth and crisp.
Overall, Flanders Oud Bruin, well, this sure is according to style. I get it for the most part however, I’m still not sold on this style. Its nice to review because I finally understand this style but still consider it a bit over rated. To me, I most likely wouldn’t have this again, but if you like that mouth puckering sourness that wishes to suck your lips off of your face, I say go for this.
