La Folie, French for "the folly," is a beer steeped in New Belgium brewing tradition. This wood-aged, sour brown spends one to three years in big oak barrels known as foeders. And when the beer finally hits the glass, La Folie is sharp and sour, full of green apple, cherry, and plum-skin notes. Pouring a deep mahogany, the mouthfeel will get you puckering while the smooth finish will get you smiling. Not a beer for the timid, La Folie is a sour delight that will turn your tongue on its head. Find out why it's considered one of the best sour beers around.

Bomber poured into tumbler. 2009 bottle--or so I was told. I don’t see a vintage anywhere on the bottle. Pours a deep burgandy with a small dissipating head. Aroma is really funky--I smelled the pungency as soon as I opened it from two feet away. Also present is some brown sugar, barnyard, tart crisp fall apples. Taste is mouth-puckering sour--by far the most sour beer I’ve had. Granted, I’m still fairly new to this style, but this is seriously sour. I don’t detect any sweet or bitter notes whatsoever. It’s all sour. Hints of cheese and earth (like mushrooms) on the back of the tongue. Delicious. Full, full in body; highly carbonated with an oily mouthfeel. Awesome beer.

Bottle from a trade with cbkschubert. 2006 vintage, bottle #1233. Shared at Maltzilla’s All American Weekend. Pours hazy reddish brown color with tan head. Sour cherry aroma with some wood and funk. Wow, this is extremely sour. Sour cherry and apple flavor with some oak and earthiness. Very acetic. Light to medium body with lively carbonation. A great brew. Huge thanks Craig.

Sampled from the 22oz bottle. The beer is sour. Really sour - but it is incredibly wonderful. Lip puckering good. Certainly not a traditional beer, and I don’t think I could drink this alone, but as a group, together with others, it’s good.

2009. Dark maroon, transparent. Little head. Aroma is raspberry seeds, sour cherries, berry jam - wonderful fruit flavors abound - dry oak and subtle earthiness. Reminiscent of Rodenbach Grand Cru. The taste is very sour and dry. Great pucker. Wonderful sour.

500ml bottle. Big balsamic vinegar aroma. One of the most intense Krieks out there. Oily head, deep cherry red color. Hardcore cherry sourness. Lemony brett. Intense. Deep oaky tones as well. Awesome beer.

Location: Bottle at Max and Andy's Fantasy Tasting, 5/1/10

Aroma: The nose has wood, sour cherries, roasted malts, and a other berry notes
Appearance: It pours a hazy dark reddish-brown color with a beige head atop it
Flavor: The taste is somewhat sour and woody with a flavor and a nice tartness
Palate: It has a solid mouthfeel, a medium body, and a long and somewhat acidic finish
Overall Impression: Overall, I thought this beer was very solid, but it didn't blow me away. Just a very solid sour beer. There is not much more for me to add beyond that...
