It’s hard being the sequel, unless you wrote the original story. Inspired by the continual hopping process we invented with 90 Minute IPA, 60 Minute builds on that one-of-a-kind process and flavor, crafting a solid gold hit that’s found its own identity.
Brewed using a boatload of intense Northwest hops, we boil this continually hopped IPA for a full 60 minutes, adding more than 60 hop additions continuously to create a bold and timeless flavor. Continually hopped to deliver a pungently, citrusy, grassy hop flavor without being crushingly bitter, 60 Minute IPA is a surprisingly sessionable IPA for the craft enthusiast.
You’ll quickly see why this sequel has become our best selling beer, and why you’ll find yourself coming back to it again and again.
The Greatest Invention You’ll Ever Taste
It was back in the mid-90s when we started messing around with extreme versions of super hoppy IPAs. We would use foolhardy amounts of hops, creating a really pronounced bitterness that seemed out of place.
After an ‘aha!’ moment while watching a cooking show on TV, Dogfish Head founder & CEO Sam Calagione tracked down one of those old school vibrating football games to help feed the beer a continual stream of hop pellets. Boom! Continual hopping was born!
You see, traditionally brewers make two hop additions - one big dose early in the boil for flavor, and another bunch at the end for aroma. But thanks to a rigged up football-machine-turned-continual-hopper and our addition of equal increments throughout the entire boil, Sam was able to create an outrageously hoppy IPA, without being crushingly bitter.
Now all these years later, and after much more sophisticated second, third and fourth generation contraptions have taken over our continual hopping process, the theory and execution are essentially unchanged.
In 2019 we celebrate the 20th anniversary of continual hopping and the really special experience that comes with it. Who knew that a thrift store game and a random cooking show would put us on a path to creating ‘the greatest invention you’ll ever taste.’

12 fl oz bottle.Pours out clear and pale golden. Small head. Herb overripe grapefruit on the nose. Starts bitter hopy, followed by a malty bedding. Salty hints? Smooth brewing water, lower bitterness to the end. Good one.

Ah, good ol’ 60 minute. Weird, how I’ve never said anything on this one. Here goes.
Almost always served in a pint glass, remember it’s an AIPA, so let’s not overdo things here. I think once I had it in a snifter and then thought it really didn’t do anything special so continued going back to the good ol’ pint glass.
The appearance was a nice hazy light golden orange color with a decent one finger white foamy head that dissipates within about a minute.
The smell had a nice blend of citrus to piney hops to allow a nice sweet caramel maltiness to enter in when it warms.
The taste was mainly bittersweet through a wonderful combination of all of the previously mentioned flavors.
On the palate, this one sits about a good light to medium in body that shows a great sessionability about it.
Overall, though I may miss a go - to AIPA when I used to live on the East Coast, I know this was always a spectacular beer to have with a crab meat sandwich and a slab of melted Muenster cheese over top.

12 fl oz (355 ml) bottle at home. Almost hazy golden-orange color with white head. Aroma begins hoppy, mostly pine sense, then it becomes sweeter with a strange (but nice) scent of garlic, oregano and olive oil!! Taste begins sweet and then it becomes bitter. Light to medium body, oily texture, average carbonation and long bitter finish.

12ox bottle from I Like That, Portsmouth, NH. Amber with a billowing white head; powerfully hopped aroma; buttery malt body with some candied citrus fruit and a gentle but sustained woody bitterness. A good benchmark against which to judge other American IPAs.

Klar mørk gylden, lille tæt skum. Aroma: fyr, sød citrus. Tør bitterhed i smagen, mandarin, men samtidig fyldig og cremet. Lang eftersmag. God oplevelse, virker ret kompleks.
