It’s hard being the sequel, unless you wrote the original story. Inspired by the continual hopping process we invented with 90 Minute IPA, 60 Minute builds on that one-of-a-kind process and flavor, crafting a solid gold hit that’s found its own identity.
Brewed using a boatload of intense Northwest hops, we boil this continually hopped IPA for a full 60 minutes, adding more than 60 hop additions continuously to create a bold and timeless flavor. Continually hopped to deliver a pungently, citrusy, grassy hop flavor without being crushingly bitter, 60 Minute IPA is a surprisingly sessionable IPA for the craft enthusiast.
You’ll quickly see why this sequel has become our best selling beer, and why you’ll find yourself coming back to it again and again.
The Greatest Invention You’ll Ever Taste
It was back in the mid-90s when we started messing around with extreme versions of super hoppy IPAs. We would use foolhardy amounts of hops, creating a really pronounced bitterness that seemed out of place.
After an ‘aha!’ moment while watching a cooking show on TV, Dogfish Head founder & CEO Sam Calagione tracked down one of those old school vibrating football games to help feed the beer a continual stream of hop pellets. Boom! Continual hopping was born!
You see, traditionally brewers make two hop additions - one big dose early in the boil for flavor, and another bunch at the end for aroma. But thanks to a rigged up football-machine-turned-continual-hopper and our addition of equal increments throughout the entire boil, Sam was able to create an outrageously hoppy IPA, without being crushingly bitter.
Now all these years later, and after much more sophisticated second, third and fourth generation contraptions have taken over our continual hopping process, the theory and execution are essentially unchanged.
In 2019 we celebrate the 20th anniversary of continual hopping and the really special experience that comes with it. Who knew that a thrift store game and a random cooking show would put us on a path to creating ‘the greatest invention you’ll ever taste.’

0.33 l bottle from 'Beer Republic'. Clear, golden amber with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, white head. Sweetish, rather fruity-resiny aroma of pine, mango, orange jam and traces of tangerine. Gently sweet, malty, rather resiny and quite fruity taste of orange jam, mango, grapefruit, pine and tangerine, followed by a short, gently bitter finish. Medium to full body, gently effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Nice classic IPA, had to try it once.

19.25 oz. can from Luekens Wine & Liquor, Seminole. Proud light to mid-gold and clear with a little bit of white head, visible carbonation. Pine aroma with a little grassy character, some orange peel. Bittersweet, rounded taste with more pine and serious hop oils swirling around the back of the mouth in the finish. Medium oily body, carbonation on the low side. A very decent IPA but maybe that little bit overrated?

Can from Binny’s Chicago. Clear golden, small, foamy, off-white head. Aroma of grapefruit juice, orange peel, pine resin, apple, unripe mango, plum jam, flowers (dandelion perhaps), fresh onion, vague cheese. Taste has sweetish apple & mango around a bitter core of grapefruit peel, pine, spices and vaguely dank onion over a bready, 'pure' cereally malt base. Resinous hoppy finish, bitter grapefruity, yeasty, somewhat sourish-citrusy and perfumey. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Not on par with the 90 Minute version but certainly a flawless classic IPA.

Large foamy white head stayed on an unclear light amber coloured body. Fruity, light malt & bitter aroma. Medium bodied, nicely carbonated with a clean back. Pine, citrus, light malt & resinous tastes with a long bitter finish. It's a good one.

12 oz. can, 6% ABV
AROMA: Scents of citrus (lemon, grapefruit), hops, and resin. The citrus aroma becomes more predominant, and some new floral notes become apparent, as the beer warms to room temperature.
APPEARANCE: Pours a clear golden color with a tall, tightly frothy head that dissipates very slowly with average lacing.
TASTE: A very brief instance of sweetness when it first hits the tongue and then the bitterness takes over for the rest of the ride. Predominant flavors of resin and hops, with some mild undertones of grapefruit.
MOUTHFEEL: Medium bodied with a coarse texture. Finish is dry and has a long note of bitterness.
OVERALL: I'll just say upfront that I much prefer their 90 minute IPA as it has more diverse flavors and better balance between sweet and bitter. The bitterness of the 60 Minute IPA is on the borderline of being too much for my tastes. Then again, I'm not a huge IPA fan, so bitterness is not my forte. However, having said that, I can see myself occasionally drinking this, as there are times when I'm in the mood for something that is a little more on the bitter side.

355ml bottle. Opalescent, orangey golden colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, white to off-white head. Sweet-ish, pale and caramel malty, fruity, slightly citrusy and piney, resinous, hoppy aroma, notes of mandarine, orange, some melon, pineapple with slight jelly bear touch, whiffs of lychee, minimally grassy and floral overtones. Taste is sweet, pale and caramel malty, mildly bitter, fruity hoppy with slight jelly bear touch, notes of melon, some lychee, pineapple, citrusy hints of mandarine, lemon, a grassy touch, some lemon tea, some resin, some mineral bitterness as well. Minimally creamy and oily, overall watery texture, smooth and soft, slightly dry palate, fine, soft, mildly prickly carbonation. Not the IPA with most intense hop flavours to be found out there, but rich, multifaceted, very sophisticated, perfected - iconic.
