This mammoth imperial red ale leads with a tantalizing hop aroma that is quickly complemented by an enormous malt backbone. Finishing with a multitude of hoppy goodness, this “Monster Beer” is truly not for the faint at heart.

A giant, giant beer, and one that completely changes after about eight months on the shelf. Fresh, the name fits. Old, eh. So let’s go with the fresh: Very citric and piney, but with an orange-glazed cinnamon bun heart, this beer screams largess. The hops give a lovely grapefruit slant to the brew, but the super-sweet malts get a bit thick as the alcohol seeps its way into your internal ketchup. One a night is plenty, for damn sure. But you’ll be glad you drank it. (9/08)

Review from notes, sampled 1/10/2008 Pours a deep brown with ruby highlights when held up to the light. Has a smallish head that disappears quickly. Aroma is surprisingly malty with caramel and biscuit aromas as well as a citrus hop aroma. I was expecting an over the top hop bomb. Taste is more caramel and bitter resinous citrusy hops. Very well balanced beer. Another great brew from Terrapin, my favorite brewery from Georgia.

Draft at Paradiso Alexandria. Amber color. Aroma of butterscotch, flavor starts sweet and syrupy, then turns malty, then finishes nicely bitter. Not overly hopped, so the name is a bit deceiving. Decent.

Bottle thanks to Dan! Poured a hazy amber red with a gray head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma had a nice pine hop note with a slight backing citrus note and a hint of darker sweet grain. Flavor had strong pine throughout but was balanced by the presence of a grain note.

Bottled@Akkurat, Stockholm. Deep murky reddish brown colour with a small creamy beige head. Aroma is caramel malts, some bready malts as well as some citrusy, grassy and fruity hops along with mild notes of spruce. Flavour is caramel malts, some mild bready notes as well as lots of citrus, fruity, zesty and floral hoppyness. A nice balance between the malts and hops makes this rather easy to drink, even though being above 8 % ABV.

Bottle - thanks mixmasterob. Pours a murky dark caramel color with a modest tan head. Nose is sweet with candied sugar, caramel, citrus, and a little bready. Tastes sweet and malty with tons of caramel before the stong citrus hopping takes effect. Florals in the background and a great balance of sugary sweetness to the citrus and floral hops. Hints of the high octane. A big red ale.

12oz bottle. 2009 vintage opened June 2010. Super-thick, muddy brown color. Small, steady beige head laces the sides of the glass. Nice bitter hop aromas on top of sugary amber malt. A very well done Imperial Red, lots of depth. Rich malts, maybe a touch of chocolate, certainly healthy doses of specialty malts either way. Approaching syrupy, with the big sugary malt backbone melding together quite nicely with the solid, mulit-faceted barrage of hops. One of the best and affordable Imperial Reds I’ve had.

Sample at the "Beer Tasting on the Front Porch". Pours an iced tea color with a medium beige head that diminishes steadily to a wispy film. Rings of lacing. Aroma of hops, sweet molasses and malt. Medium body with flavors of resiny hops, bready malt and pine. The finish is hoppy with a sweet malty aftertaste. Good IIPA all around.

Deep red with a beige head. Intense hoppy aroma with plenty of booze, too. Full, slick body. Sweet malts, heavy molasses, citrus malts, chocolate, and lightly roasted. Finish has a bit of bitterness and sugary sweetness. Good beer.
