Leute Bokbier was first brewed in 1927. It was then called Leutebock and was a lager (bottom fermentation), a completely different beer than the current one. Production was stopped after a number of years. In 1997, 70 years later, Leute Bokbier was relaunched as a completely different beer.

Fun fact: the name “bokbier” does not refer to bokbier, but literally to the ''bok'' or buck.

Bottle @ The One, Brugge. Dark red with a thick frothy head. Comes in a glass without a round base and requires its own wooden eggcup hole to keep it upright. Blonde in style with a recognisable nose that includes a small darker fruit sweetness, but not too much. Has a similar taste.

Dubbel (certainly not a true Bock) since 1997 and named after a bottom-fermented real ’bock’ this brewery made till the twenties. Served in a tumbler without a foot, held by a wooden holder. Had this several times in the past but got a bottle as a gift, so time for a re-rating... Very thick and rocky, dense, very thickly lacing, pale beige head towering over a clear rusty bronze beer with fierce sparkling. Aroma of caramel, raisins, hint of milk chocolate, iron, toasted bread, cane sugar, rye bread, dried plums; sweetish onset of dried fruits, candied dates, raisins, ’deep’ and basic sourishness but not very refreshing, soft and ’fluffy’ mouthfeel with medium carbo; slick caramelly and toasted, bit nutty malts, straightforward but not unpleasant, paving the way for a simple finish of lingering caramel malt sweetishness, ’sourdough’ yeastiness and herbal, earthy hop bitterishness; brown sugar sweetishness remains. Acceptable dubbel, does share some similarities with the top-fermented Dutch bokbier classics, but not confident enough to achieve its own position in the Belgian beer world, so actually rather forgettable among so many other ’decent’ dubbels...
