Bottle in NYC hotel room. Opaque black color, medium-sized brownish head. Aroma has ash, wet tobacco. Medium-bodied. Toasted, burned malty flavor. A bit ashy. Quite ashy-burned stout, kind of unbalanced although drinkable.

Deep dark brown body with a nice two centimetre tall creamy tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, oatmeal, nuts and toffee, all with a little grain and sweetness. Medium-bodied; Strong roasted malt flavours with oatmeal and grain, followed by a smooth caramel sweetness, balanced by a touch of citrus and PNW hops. Aftertaste shows mostly roasted malt qualities, but a little sweetness from caramel and a nice subdued but noticeable hoppy bite make this well-rounded. Overall, a nice Black Pale Ale with less character than a black IPA, but showing nice complexity throughout. Nice to sample and a good option if you like either porters or APAs as this is a good mix of both. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in New York (Bowery), New York on 05-December-2015 for US$2,99 sampled on the train from New York to Washington on 06-December-2015.

Draught. Opaque dark brown with small foamy tan head, coffee beans aroma, high carbonation, mocha taste, full body, medium bitter roasted malt finish. Quite nice, though more like a black lager.

The Sampler, Brooklyn tap: pours black with a light beige head. Aromanis light chocolate, pine, and some roast. Taste is moderately bitter and toasty. Mild black IPA, but has all the flavors in proper balance. Easy to drink.
