We begin with a custom mixture of dark and roasted barley malts, then we add the choicest hops. The resulting ale has a dark chestnut color and a deep nutty flavor. Brewed specially for Trader Joe’s.

12 oz. bottle. Pours black, with a fair sized, tan head. The aroma is black bread, pecans, light coffee, and some light herbal and peat notes. Nice, earthy sweetness up front, with a light bittering through the finish. Medium body, smooth, lightly effervescent, and fairly clean. Overall, this is a surprisingly nice, well balanced, and approachable beer. This manages to be easy and mellow, without being boring or weak. I’m a little startled myself that I’m complementing a Trader Joe’s beer this much...

12 oz. bottle from Trader Joe’s Portsmouth, NH. Dark brown color. Aroma is a pleasant mix chocolate malt and toffee. Body and flavor is on the thin side. Yet no problems at all. Taste is mild chocolate, hints of nuts and sugar. Well… overall if you what cheap beer that is not harsh, this is ok. This will not get anyone excited but for sure drinkable.

Pours mahogany into a Sam glass. Tan head with little retention recedes to hug rim. Sweet stale chocolate aromas. Dry with dusty cocoa, sour nuts and caramel front to back.

Bottle pourers light brown with red hue, thin off white head. Aroma is thin roast and Carmel malt. Pretty sweet and straight malt flavors of caramel and sweet molasses. Eh.

bottle - Pours dark amber with a two finger light tan head and an aroma of roast malt with a little chocolate and dark fruit. It tastes sweet with caramel and nutty notes. This brew is medium bodied and good.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Trader Joes Short Pump, 9/9/11
Aroma: The nose is sweet and malty, some caramel, chocolate, roast, and dark fruit
Appearance: It pours a clear brownish color with a creamy beige head and good lacing
Flavor: It tastes rich and malty, fairly sweet and roasty, similar components to the nose
Palate: This stuff is medium bodied, with a creamy, smooth, clean, and rich mouthfeel
Overall Impression: I've had this beer before, and I remembered enjoying it, but I didn't remember enough about it to enter a rating. Now that I tried it again, I can say for sure that this is a really nice dark ale. Don't pre-judge this one because it's Trader Joes/Gordon Biersch, it is some really good stuff.
