Espresso is a drink that is not for the faint of heart. Pulling a perfect shot is as much a science as it is an art form. Come to think of it, the same can be said for brewing beer. Of course, both coffee and beer have certain, shall we say ‘uplifting’ qualities. Combine the two is a natural progression.

Bottle to nonic pint glass, the appearance was a fairly dark brown color with a thin layer of white foamy head. Swiftly falls off to barely leave any lace.
The aroma had a super sweet milk chocolate fudge maltiness. Lemon sweetness. Slight coffee beans and coffee creamer.
The flavor leaned towards the sweet side comibining all of the previously mentioned aromas together. Subtle roast here, but not much. Aftertaste was milk chocolate with a touch of the lemon sweetness. Finish was long and sweet.
The palate was between light and medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt fine. Body did feel low, though.
Overall, Southern Tier trying to take a style that’s usually overly sweet and keeping it that way.

Bottle from Foodtown, Cold Spring, NY, USA. A dark brown/black coloured pour with a thin beige head on top. Strong rich coffee, expresso, chocolate aroma. Tastes of rich coffee, expresso, some chocolate, tiny hint of grapefruit lurking, slight sweetness too. Really love the expresso in this one. A nicely executed stout from Southern Tier. I consumed this on the grass in 85 degree heat in late October, lovely little town in the Hudson Valley.

Lots of coffee here for sure, but decent amounts of caramel and roast malt. Black pour with good head and lacing. Bittersweet finish. Tap at Assawoman.

A deep dark stout with a thick frothy lacing creamy brown head. In aroma, nice chocolate malt with loads of coffee grind, musty character, light vanilla, alcohol warmth, very nice and smooth. In mouth, a nice bitter chocolate with loads of resinous coffee grind, coffee oil, grassy hops, alcohol warmth, very nice and complex. On tap at North Country Brewfest 2016.

12 oz. bottle. If your stomach can’t handle lactose, be careful with this bad boy! I can smell the lactose sugar mixed with charred espresso bean. Milk chocolate noticeable.

The body and mouthfeel are nice, creamy texture with medium body. It also shows some very mild bitterness to help with the over the top sweetness. I’m guessing the lemon peel is giving the bitter element. Good for sure but not really “Top Tier” Overall, still well worth a pint.

Bottle from Bert’s Solid dark brown decent sized mocha head. Big roasty coffee with a solid roasty earthy bitterness. Faint citrus that I’m not sure really adds much. Nice coffee stout though.
