Rather than depending on the floral, herbal aspects of traditional hopping, Harry Magill's Spiced Stout uses spices for aroma. Molasses and maple syrup supplement malt for distinct coffee and chocolate notes. The name comes from a family connection; Larry Bell’s great-grandfather, Harry Magill Sr., wrote a song called "Watch the Cubs Play Ball" for the Chicago Cubs.

Way too busy for a stout but comes together with a basic drinkability. Black pour with good head and lacing. Clove and sage with some caramel and roast. Black pour with great head and lacing. Sweet finish. Tap at Churchkey.

On tap at abv. Pours a pure black color with a medium beige head. A big spicy cherry nose. The flavor is big sweet berries, licorice, chocolate, some roast. The spices come across as almost sour cherry pits. Solid.

Draft - Ginger, clove and roast. Jet black with a light brown head. Tons of ginger with a bit of toasted malts. Ginger overwhelms but if you like ginger it is pretty nice.

On two at Eccentric. Pour is dark brown with aromas of molasses, nutmeg and maybe something else that is pie related. Flavor is smokey. Didn’t see that coming! Smoke and molasses seem to drive the show with a decent stout presence under it all.

Sampled from the tap at the brewpub. Pours black with a grayish head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has notes of nutmeg and roasted malts with a bit of underlying ginger. Flavor starts with strong roasted malts and are joined by a combination of ginger and nutmeg.
