After secondary fermentation in the bottle in the purest tradition of Floreffe’s abbey beers, it has a very deep, almost black colour with a brown head

(Bottle: 33 cl) Clear, quite dark with a distinguished reddish tone. Head is huge, generous, creamy and quite sturdy. Extremely aromatic and spicy. Hints of chocolate and a discreet sweetness which is balanced by a ditto discreet bitterness. Hints of coffee. 120103

Bottle. Very perfumy malty tequila aroma. Dark brown colour, small head. Roasted, brown sugar flavour. Quite peppery, perfumy flavour. Seems there is too much perfume in this beer for me.

Deep red-black colour, little brownish head. Malt, spicy aroma. Malty and spicy flavour, really enjoyable. The initial flavour is sweet and it ends sweet bittery. Fine beer.

Very dark burgundy-brown (not that you'd know that if you used that ridiculous frosted Floreffe glass!). Deep fruit aroma - plum, tangerine, plus alcohol and chocolate. Flavour is sweet, fruit-oriented (peach, tangerine), adding in hints of nut, chocolate, pepper and coriander. This leads to a sweet finish showing more orangey citric notes, toffee and vaguely nutty nuances. A touch too much carbonation for a strong dark ale. Restrained by everpresent yeastiness reasures me because at times this gets a little mundane. Stronger tasting than 8% would indicate.

Bottled. Very dark brown. Aroma of bitter herbs and tobacco. Rather dry and roasty with a herbal flavour reminiscent of Jägermeister. Medium bodied with some caramel flavour and a clean finish with some bitterness.

!BEER HAS CHANGED NAME FROM 'Meilleure' TO 'Prima Melior'! Dark with cassis-red shine, clear. Thick brown head, collapsing. Perfumed nose, marshmallows, cedarwood. Also like sweet worts, green beer. Taste gives immediate cigar, tobacco. Stout-like, but very sweet. Well-bodied, but a bit empty. Very perfumey, but seemingly lacking in malt. The pasteurising, filtering? D'Oh - starting so promessing. Surprising seen the tobacco-start. And then - nothing.

A very lively beer - it foamed over when I opened the bottle. It is black like a porter - I wouldn't call this a "brune" - I wonder if Belgium has a name for a black beer? The head is big and brown - but disappears rather quick because of the lively character. The aroma is sweet with notes of chocolate, apples, pears, and smoke - a very complex aroma. The flavor is sweet too with notes of apples and strawberries. It ends on a sweet-smoked note. The flavor is also very complex. With the color and the smoke notes - I would call this a Belgium Porter.

[Rerate, Abbaye de Floreffe Brune, 8.0%] Dark amber, brown colour; giant thick head, wonderful lace. Nice aroma, some malt, light roasted malt, sweet.
Very good body, really powerful sensation in the mouth, quite a lot of malt, better balanced than the Triple by the bitterness, by some roasted malt bitterness and by a very light liquorice. Also the final is better than the Triple, anyway it still lacks some aromatic hop.
Pretty good and sweet example of dark abbey ale
[22-07-2002; 8-5-7-3-14] Brown colour; big thick head. Nice aroma of malt, and very nice floral hop. Good malt taste, rather sweet. Ordinary palate, with some nice hop, partially hidden.

After all those weeks of German ’quality’, I was finally back to my favorite place of drinking beers: Kafe Belgie in Utrecht, Netherlands. And what did they have on tap: yess. The Floreffe Meilleure. Outstanding black color, cloudy and with a beautiful head. Chocolate and malts are the main ingredients of the perfume of this beer. Taste does remind me of a Rochefort, i’m gonna get one today i guess! Still it’s easy to drink and the mild well-balanced palate is a pleasure.
