This deep-brown winter ale offers up complex aromas of fruit, alcohol and hops. The boozy mouth feel is vaguely sweet with hints of brunt caramel. Up-front bitterness accompanies a surprising element of complex red fruit, followed by an expressively hoppy finish. Solstice d’Hiver is brewed only once a year, and is then aged for 4 to 5 months before being sold. This aging process is necessary to achieve an ideal equilibrium between the sharp bitterness and the other flavours in the beer. After aging, it is then sold starting mid-December of each year, until stocks last.
This beer was first crafted at our Montreal brewpub in December of 1998.

Flaske 330ml fra Vinmonopolet Tromsø - Sentrum. Mørk amber. Høyt tett skum som daler veldig sakte. Lett bæaroma. Smaken bær & syrlig frukt på en bakgrunn av malt. Varmende alkoholisk ettersmak. Litt tundrikkelig.

30.01.2018, 0,34l bottle @ home:
Nice slightly bubbly-creamy longlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet and harsh yeasty, weeds, almond essence, harsh yeast, fruit stones, candi sugar, caramel malts, booze, minerals, sour grass, overripe banana. Taste is harsh mineraly, weeds, harsh yeast, candi sugar, booze, almond essence, fruit stones, caramel malts, bark, soil, medicine. Longlasting harsh bitterness, dry medical mouthfeel. Drainpour! Barley wine? No! Bad quad? Definitely...

Bottle picked up by my brother for. An opaque orange-gold with a filmy tan head, typical barleywine really. The nose gave prunes, figs, raisins, bready with some sharpness from the alcohol (but not too much) and a bit of spice. A much maltier and richer body, not overly bitter. Not as complex as the nose but gives you some spice and breadiness. A nice beer. I have a few more cellaring at the folks from that same 2016 batch I believe... ap 4 ar 8 t 7-8 p 4 o 13-4

On tap at Muted Horn Berlin. Comes with a dark reddish-brown color and a nice off-white head. Nice nose of acidic grapes, old balsamico vinegar, roasted malts, caramel. Nice sweet taste. Roasted Malts and dried fruits at finish. Well balanced bitterness. Great one!

Front bitter and burnt caramel, back strong malt flavor. Good winter beer but right now is like a punch in the forehead.

From the tap at FOB, Rimini, Italy on Journee Peche. Pours deep brown worth intense red reflections. Aroma is reminiscent of berries, but also nuts, and roasted malt. Body is medium with low carbonation. Taste is intensely bitter (for a barley wine), showing also some sweetness. Finish is long enough, but not extreme.
