American style IPA from this contemporary Irish craft brewery, made with one type of (Irish) malt, hence ’single malt IPA’ instead of the more expected ’single hop IPA’... Bottle at Ganzerik in Ghent. Snow white, bubbly, coarse, moussy head over a cloudy orangey blonde beer. Aroma breathes a lot of ’old hops urine’ and stale sweat, next to more elegant impressions of moldy lemon, old orange juice, dried bread crumbs, kiwi, minerals, white pepper, unripe gooseberry. Fruity, crisp flavor, hints of orange, yellow kiwi and passion fruit, minerally carbo, bready malt core, sweetish and supporting a grapefruity and ’orangey’ finish, resinous and aromatic, paired with yeasty phenols and bittering adequately, with slight tonic water-like effect in the end. One of the vast number of average ’international IPAs’ that have conquered the world in the 21st century, could have been a Czech, Dutch or Italian IPA just as well, but by itself enjoyable enough.
