Bottle at Taps Beer Bar, Kuala Lumpur. Poured a clear medium amber with a thin white head. The aroma is sweet malt, light alcohol. The flavour is moderate to strong sweet, light bitter, with a rich sweet malt, toffee caramel, alcohol bitter palate and a sligjtly lingering bitter finish. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. It’s 10.3% but the alcohol sits nicely in the background with little alcohol burn. One of the best barley wines I’ve had.

Collaboration brew, a barley wine with regular, moussy, off-white, fairly stable head and deep coppery amber colour, clear with vivid sparkling. Strong and sweet, unusual but pleasantly perfumey bouquet of marmelade, (strong) candied cherries, strawberry ice cream, orange liqueur, honey, pancakes, apple sauce, gingerbread, madera, liquorice, vanilla, something rather undisturbingly chemical (nail polish) and a remarkable presence of spring water-like minerals. Sweet onset but not cloying, honeyish, lots of candied fruit (especially orange) with a pleasantly bitter, spicy accent and soft but tingling carbonation; smooth caramelly and nutty malts in the middle, with increasing spicy and peppery, ’deep’ and prolonged hop bitterness towards the end (perhaps a bit much for a barley wine claiming to be English in style - this is more an American-style barley wine); apart from the hops and a strongly persisting caramelly malt character, the finish also reveals a great deal of booze, almost cognac- or whisky-like and almost becoming astringent. Slow sipper, that much is clear, with sufficient complexity and personality; the aroma is a bit weird, but pleasant enough if you’re into this style. I’ll be slowly enjoying this from a wine glass as a nightcap. And that’s what barley wines are for.

Bottle from The Bottle Shop Canterbury and drunk at home. Hazy deep amber colour with a lasting beige head. Strawberry jam it’s delicious. Sweetish aroma, some hop on aroma too. Flavour has a mixture of strawberry jam and English style hop flavour. Bit of toffee. It is rather lovely though.
