This really, really, ridiculously good looking eighth incarnation of our muchly-beloved peated stout (this year aged in cognac barrels) will leave you gasping for that last breath of clean air before succumbing to the intense chocolate, roasty, shmokin’, cognac-y flavour.

Cognac BA peated stout from upside-down land, fun! All very subtle, but nicely balanced. Little bit of smokyness, little bit of cognac, some sweetness, coffee flavours, some roast. All there!

Sampled from the tap at The Taphouse. Pours black with a creamy brown head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has a nice smoke supported by dark grains, roasted malts, tobacco and a bit of Cognac barrel. Flavor has tobacco, smoke and Cognac with dark grains and light roast underlying.

(Bottle) Black with small dense tan head. Aroma is smoky with some nuttty notes. Full bodied, thick, creamy, sticky with some delicate bright carbonation. Wonderful mouthfeel. Great taste too. There’s a rich dark toffee molasses sweetness that underpins the taste. It’s fairly well hidden at the start but emerges in the mid palate and fades a bit in the finish. There’s some raisin fruitiness at the start. Smoky peaty notes are present throughout but more prominent in the start and finish. Excellent beer.

Bottle. Black. A light tan head starts at a cm + but is soon less than a coat. Aroma is a little shy but fine: roast, the sea, blackberries, mocha, a light grapey waft that I guess is the cognac. 8- Viscous and very smooth with low carbonation. The peat is there but never has a chance to be biting on the palate because it's buried by brioche, chocolate, roast and berries. Likewise bitterness struggles to break free. A rumbling monster next to last year's and 650ml is going to be too much for one sitting. Another good beer in a good series.
