Young Henrys Motorcycle Oil is a smooth, hoppy, black beer with mild bitterness, roughly based on a hopped-up American porter. Originally brewed as a small batch in 2017 it’s back in black by popular demand, bigger and bolder as this year’s YH Winter release. Best served loud.

9/11/2022. Draught at The Lookout Echo Point, Katoomba overlooking the Blue Mountains. Pours clear black with a small frothy beige coloured head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, liquorice, coffee. Moderate sweetness, medium bitterness and body. Quite smooth. Enjoyed it.

330ml can from a Fairfield, Victoria, convenience store. Poured a dark brown, almost black colour with a short-lived, frothy tan head. The aroma is roasty malt, liqourice, light red-berry fruits and some hop notes. The flavour is liqourice bitter, with a roasty, liqourice, smoky, light dry ashtray, light floral hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

(Can) Good looking beer - black with big tan head. Nice hoppy aroma - pine and citrus. Medium bodied with excellent mouth filling soft and bright carbonation. Taste is fine but a little underwhelming. There’s some nice bitterness in the finish along with some nice dark roast notes. The foretaste and mid palate are fine but a bit dull - there’s a bit of fruitiness and a hint of chocolate, but just lacks character. Very drinkable.

500ml can into pint glass. Dark brown beer with large crown of foam on top. Nose of pine needles, grass, and overripe fruit. Lightly bitter taste with a bit of smoky malt. Finish is lingering cocoa and bitter fruit. Nice, easy drinking porter.

The name for this one is probably a little misleading, as it's on the lighter end of the dark beer spectrum. What makes it stand out is the really dry mocha aftertaste that really stands out long after you stop drinking. The citrus is pleasant without being overbearing and the length is pretty good. It actually tastes better after you've finished. That's a first.

Can. Very dark brown, modest beige head. Aroma of oranges and citrus blossoms over bread, light roast and licorice. Light bodied - a bit thin really - with moderate carbonation. Bread, roast, coffee, then light pine and some citrus chop off the malt. Dryish and hoppy but not that bitter. Pretty good - I would have liked just a hint of bottom end rumble.
