Dark beer, almost black with creamy and brown foam. Rich and powerful beer with a very long after-taste. Very complex and still soft aroma. The high level of alcohol is very subtlety hidden. It is prepared with strongly roasted malt which gives its very special taste.

Bottke from BIAB. It pours dark rich brown with a thick, foamy light tan head. The aroma is bitter - sweet, roasted malt, juicy fruits, berry, raisin, sultana, cherry, plum, date, cookie dough, touch of coffee and fruit cake. The taste is dry, bitter - sweet, plummy, date, black grape, jammy fruits, fruit cake, toasty malt, roast, coffee grounds, treacle, warming alcohol, slightly charred wood and spice with a drying finish. Medium - full body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Fruity and moreish. Robust and quaffable.

Dark ales and quads are particular favorites of mine. I’m trying this Grand Cru after receiving a 33 cl bottle by way of an appreciated merchant in Belgium. The glass of choice tonight is my Straffe Hendrik snifter picked up in Bruges. The liquid shows a rather dark brown contrasted by a full cover of light tan bubbles. I like the nose, red cherries, some maltiness effect and berries. But the taste greatly surpasses the smell. Quite malty, figs, dark cherries, dough, a sliver of vanilla from somewhere. Rich sensation. Really decent.

Tap, Café Morshuis Albergen. Diacetyl and a slight infection (this beer was beer of the month december 2005 and has been on tap since) but otherwise quite OK. Malty. Thick mouthfeel. Cherry sweets. The alcohol is totally hidden. Sweet and sugary. Touch of roast. Large glass for only € 2,-.

33 cl bottle @ home. BBE 11.10.2020 Aroma has grassy hops and sweet malt. Flavour has very strong grassy hops, some ripe fruits and some sweet malt. Quite unexpected; my mouth was waiting for a sweet, malty and strong Belgian ale but got only strong grassy hops. Sweetness takes a bit over at the end of the glass but hops still override everything. Hides the ABV well.

Donkerbruin bier met schuim wat snel wegzakt. Smaak is warm, krachtig, zoet en vol met iets van pruimen, rozijnen en karamel. Erg goed bier !

A dakr brown beer, a head is medium and beige. Aroma has dried fruitness but also fresh fruits, raisin, plum, apricot, aroma reminds me the great Abbaye des Rocs Triple Impériale. Taste has dried fruits, raisin, prune, also some fresher fruitness, some herbal bitterness and alcohol. Medium bodied. Quite nice.

Bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck. Hazy brown colour, creamy beige foam. Sweet nose of plums, caramel, dark malts. Taste is rather sweet, bit spicy; well balanced.
