Koff Porter is a top fermented dark, almost black, unfiltered beer, with a malty roasted aroma. Four different malts are used for this brew: Pilsner, Münchener, coloured and brown malt. These make up the beer’s characteristic aromas: roastedness, chocolate, coffee and liquorice. Koff Porter is generously hopped with Saazer and bittering hops.

Bottle. Body is a dark brown color with a pretty big two/three finger head of foam and froth. Aromas are chocolatey with some dark fruit mixed in... maybe a little peat and molasses, too. Flavor is fairly sweet... picks up much more on the prune/dark fruit than the smokey peat and molasses notes from the nose. I can’t really pick up the alcohol at all, and I’m not perceiving any warmth off it, either. Could be just a little more complex in terms of aromas and flavor/development to get higher marks. Still, very nice.

Tap @ In de Wildeman. Dark black color, short dark brown head. Aroma of some coffee and licorice, quite weak though, some candy sugar, dark fruit. Very clean and very bitter taste, not expected because hops are not abundant in aroma. Very malty, coffee. Clean bitter palate.

An almost black beer with a medium and beautiful brown head. Aroma roasted, bread, liquirice and chocolate and lots of milky sourness. Taste is quite dry, roastiness, coffee, milky sourness and also lots of nice, dry and herbal bitterness. Almost full bodied, nice and smooth to drink. Very good, rich, quite sour, balanced and enjoyable porter.

33cl bottle - Pours black with a large tan head. The aroma is of smoky, dark roasted malt. The coffee accented flavor is darkly roasted and again I noticed some smokiness to it. Moderate bitterness balances this porter well, though I thought it was just a little thin for the style. It’s good, but I didn’t think it was as great as many seem to think.

33 cl bottle. Sugary impy stout smell upon opening. Pours a thick brown under an inch-high brown foam. First impression I get in tasting is its hops, a rare thing for a porter. But there they are, noble as Edward Tudor yet crude as Tom Canty. Backed up with plenty of molasses and fusels. It also reminds me of my very first Guinness all those years ago. Roasted graininess and wood burls, a little apricot and prune in the finish. Way too easy drinking for something this powerful!

Peanut and oak aroma. Brownish black pour with a thin brown head, nice lacing. Roasted malt taste with some hops. Not overly sweet or tart. Smoke hops and vanilla finish. Middle of the road porter, but still a great beer.

On tap at the Oluthoune Kaisla, Helsinki. Shiny jet black with a flat caramel head; a dense oily aroma; clean and cutting when tasted, slightly acidic, then aromatic coffee, then a fruit sweetness, then a delicately spicy aftertaste; leaving a definite "must have more" feeling in the mouth. Deceptively drinkable, little sign of the alcohol until a warm feeling kicks in as you get to the bottom of the glass.
An exceptional beer, and a good choice for my 400th rating. [5/4/8/4/18]=3.9
11.2 fl oz bottle in the Birger, Hämeenlinna. Served in a very elegant 20cl glass, intense chocolate malt aroma; black body with a milk chocolate head; austere chocolate malt flavours to start, but developing a thick oily sweetness; leading to a well structured bitter sweet finish.
