From a 330ml bottle on 19/12/2012 (bottle says Brew 1, 10252). Pours a very dark amber with a medium head. Has a strong licorice aroma with some caramel in the mix as well. The flavour is also dominated by licorice, with a good dash of roasted malt, and hints of chocolate and caramel. I don’t really know what sarparilla tastes like, but I think they should have named this a licorice stout. Has a thinnish body and medium carbonation. As observed by other raters, this is a bit of an odd brew but it comes together quite well. Would be terrific for a session at just 4%.

Bottle, 13C. Dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma of sarsaparilla , toffee, flowers. Lightish body. Not as sweet as expected from the aroma with firm toasty malt, some coffee. The sars and licorice are there and there’s spices in the moderate bitterness. The aroma’s just a bit full on, but what follows is odd but pleasant and quite nicely balanced.

Pours ruby-tinted dark brown with a large, lasting head.Sweet sarsaparilla is at the forefront of the aroma, pretty much dominating. There’s some soft roasted malt just noticeable underneath.Lots of sarsaparilla as a flavour too, although the roasted malt is a little more noticeable here, followed by a herbal bitterness. Somewhat cloying.Body feels watery.Too bad the sarsaparilla is so overpowering, I imagine this could work quite well if it was more subtle, or if the base beer was richer.
