Rich choc aroma with sweet fudgey notes. Mostly a porter but not any "steinbier" character. Good porter though,

Keg at the earl of Essex. Opaque black pour with a thin off white head. Flavour is Barry coffee and choc. Some hedgerow berry. Tasty beer.

(Bottle) Very dark brown with no head; looks rather like cola. Faint but pleasant aroma of toffee and hot cross buns. Medium body with soft fine carbonation. Unusual and very pleasant taste. Refreshing start which devils a caramel sweetness, followed by dark toffee and dark roast malt with hints of burnt toast and finishing with a bitterness that is more bitter chocolate or coffee than hops. Very drinkable.

What I really wanted tonight was an IPA, but for some reason I reached for this in the fridge, so I’m probably holding its weaknesses against it more than I otherwise would. There’s plenty of malt on the nose with the slightest hint of something floral. On the tongue it’s all caramel and chocolate with a sort of metallic finish. There’s a reasonable body to this beer, so it’s certainly pleasant but it’s by no means complex.

Bottle, pours amber with an inch of dense beige head that’s well-retained. Straightforward and fresh nose has caramel and chocolate malt and some grass. Taste is sweet and malty with chocolate, caramel and nuts. Oddly metallic finish. Quite dunkelish. Not exciting, but balanced and pretty tasty.

Aroma is very malty, like a bock, with caramel and what seems to be melanoidin malt. Little else, just some soft alcohol.Flavours are similarly malty, with more creamy caramel and melanoidin malt, finishing with a weak bitterness.Carbonation is very powerful, but at least it goes someway to dry out the finish.
