Rain Check Spiced Stout is our answer to the merciless wet weather that plagued and slowed the construction of our new brewery in Mills River, NC. This dark, rich, and roasty beer helps us forget the delays - a Rain Check we’ll take any time. Rain Check is a rich, toasty stout with flavors of burnt sugar and dark roasted malt spiked with ginger and lime to celebrate the end of dark and rainy days.

12 ounce bottle. Bottled on 03/04/2015. Pours a dense opaque black color with a large rocky tan head. Interesting roasted malt aroma has hints of lime and ginger. Sweet roasted maltiness. Notes of cocoa, brown sugar, ginger and lime zest. Alcohol is barely noticeable. Certainly unique. Sticky malt finish.

Allspice, charred oak nose, hints of clove. Black, thin tan head. Sweet, which brings out more of the flavor of the spices. Ginger, soil, allspice. Yeasty tree bark finish. Medium body, moderate carbonation. Tastefully done, not heavy.

Bouteille.

Bottle at Church Key, DC. More or less black in the glass, with a small, dense beige head. There’s salty licorice, roasted malts, molasses and some spices in the aroma. It’s full bodied, lightly warming and smooth on the palate, with quite a lot of salty licorice in the flavor. Molasses, roasted malts and some coffee too, not to forget the spices. Nutmeg, cardamom at least. Lasting sweet, salty and spiced finish. A bit heavy on the salty licorice, but sure nice. 150620

Pretty dark black, close to opaque with a thin head. Nose is...well I’m not sure. Alternatively it is roasty with an indistinct spiciness, and then it’s an acidic reminder of a vomiting episode I had a month ago (that’s a nice why of saying it smelled like my puke did). A tentative sip somewhat went in that same direction. Again it is alternately a sweet stout, mildly roasty, a touch acidic, with a mild ginger spicing, but then it becomes acrid, sour, stomach juice tasting. I’m probably the only one getting this, mainly because of just an unfortunate coincidence. Not affecting my numbers though, just weird. Still on the whole, a ginger/lime sweet stout? Not my thing. But its generally a well designed stout otherwise, I’d like to see SN take a stab at something like a foreign export stout.

12 ounce bottle from Plaza Package. Pours a hazy very dark brown with a thin creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, citrus, ginger. The taste is chocolate, ginger, roast, spice, dark fruits, hints of soy. Medium bdodied, mild lingering spice.
