Russian Imperial Stout

Black Marlin pours pitch black with a dense tan head. A wild winter beer powerful in aroma and taste. Complexity comes from 7 different malts, 3 hops and a touch of our own South African treacle. Coffee, dark chocolate, aniseed, dark fruit and caramel in the aroma prepares you for the big taste and lingering bitter finish.

This beer is best enjoyed at around 11°C and pairs well with rich warm deserts and dark chocolate. Black Marlin ages well and is a must have in your beer cellar.

Malts: Pale, Caraffa I, II & III, Crystals
Hops: Galena, Goldings, Fuggle

May 23, 2025 (7/3/7/3/14=3.4): Poured from 660mL bottle (#132/250 2013 edition) from my South Africa trip in the Pictonator cellar. Black with small tan head, very small gush on opening (no overflow). Some dark fruits and gentle roast malt, mild dry acetic brett-like note. Not great, but actually not a drain pour, more of a brett imperial stout. I don't hate it.

Aug 25, 2014 (7/3/7/3/15=3.5): Poured from 660mL bottle (#150/250 2013 edition). Black with minimal tan head. Aroma is fairly sweet with some licorice and light chocolate. Flavour brings out more coffee with chocolate, licorice and a little leather. Medium light body. Alcohol hidden. Starts sweet, roast comes in the middle, finish a bit weak. A bit light for a Russian imperial style.

Bottle at Deanso’s crappy music tasting. The aroma is sour but weak, The flavour is rich, zesty and alcoholic with bags of alcohol on the palate. A very drinkable beer in smaller quantities.

Sampled from bottle @ Dean plays crappy music tasting. Opaque pitch black color, small light brown head. Don’t get a lot of aroma. Taste malts, roastyness and some sourness.

2013, bottle, sampled in 2025. Dark brown, medium head. Deep fruity character at this age, light chocolate, some acidity and more fruitiness. This actually comes through really well...not saying it's supposed to have this character but it works nicely regardless. 7 - 7.5 - 7.5 - 7 - 7.5 = 7.4

2012, at the Cape Town Beer Festival. Dark brown.  Aroma of chocolate and a little bit of toffee.  Rich chocolate, toast, good balance and some impy sting but mellow. 3 7 7 3 14 = 3.4
