A German-style Hellerbock with a few twists, The Gift is Starr Hill’s holiday offering. The beautiful golden color only hints at the fire inside. Made with two-row and Munich malts and balanced with German noble hops, The Gift is the perfect accompaniment to any holiday event or festivity. [This started as a winter seasonal series with a different style each year. Since 2008, this has been a bock.]

Pear and honey nose. Cloudy orange, headless. Clove and orange flavor. Wheat bread notes appear at midpalate and beyond. Muskmelon notes also present. Mild DMS. Pretty nicely crafted, execution and QC could use some work. I’d love to try a fresh untainted sample.

On tap at the Capital Alehouse (downtown), Richmond VA 9/11/12011. Reddish amber with a decent, off-white head. Sweet, marmalade and red berry aroma. Flavour had some caramel, more fruit and a moderately bitter finish. Ok.

Chef Geoff’s, DC tap ($7): Pours a light copper color with a white head. Aroma is a little spicy, with sweet malts at the forefront, and even a little boozy note. The beer is rather sweet, but not as cloying and annoying as some of the other people are making it out to be. Strange bready notes (don’t know how else to describe them). There actually is a counterbalancing hops presence, which doesn’t really mitigate the sweetness of the beer. Not that bad. Drinkable, a bit strange, and nothing really all that special.

On tap at the red lion in florida, nice place. Looks like pale lager. No visible CO2. Smells just plain fresh & beery. A lager which is a little coarse. Reminds me a bit of cheaper american malt liquor. Typical bock beer experience. Probaly should be styled as a strong lager.

Super hazy golden coloured body with a large off-white head and a thick body that looks like raw manuka honey. Aroma of pale malt, unfinished wort, sweetness, apricots and some light hops. Medium-bodied; Strong citrus and orange flavours with a bit more unfinished flavours tucked in. Aftertaste has some light citrus, very light german or european hops and some malt characteristics (wheat or light malt) that show fairly well. Overall, a decent beer - okay for the style, but nothing absolutely great and nothing expected for this time of year! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Ye Olde Spirit Shop in Frederick, Maryland on 29-July-2010 sampled at home in Washington on 17-January-2011.

Couleur ambre/orange, mousse blanche.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Norm's, 2/5/10

Aroma: Bread, herbal, honey, spice, toast, caramel, and light fruity/apple notes
Appearance: It pours a golden-orange color with a thin white head
Flavor: Taste is light sweetness, toasty and doughy flavor, mild bitterness too
Palate: Above average carbonation, light-medium body, and a decent drinkability
Overall Impression: This beer is fairly solid, a nice lager. It doesn't have the huge spice presence of many of the winter seasonal offerings, but there is some spice there. Another solid beer from Starr Hill, I haven't given all of their stuff high ratings, but their stuff is very solid and sessionable overall.

**Just submitted a photo for this one, as it was missing one.
