Bottle. Light charcoal, wood, and chocolate malt aroma. Very dark brown color with large tan head. Light charcoal and chocolate malt flavor. Very light body. Okay but on the light side.

12/20/2009 Pours the deepest of dark reds with a fluffy tan head that sticks itself to the glass all the way down. Smells of cocoa and milk chocolate, grainy with some roast and dark fruits. Taste is cocoa powder with some dark fruits. Grainy malts with a hint of roast in there as well. Finishes kind of dry with a lingering roasted malt finish. Carbonation is high, very prickly and annoying. Mouthfeel is creamy and the body is medium. I’m confused by this one. Its a decent enough beer, although a bit less carbonation would have helped this out. Its labeled a Schwartzbier, but it reminds me more of a porter. Its a lot better than some of the beer Magic Hat has been trying to pass off lately. I’d enjoy another, but I wouldn’t seek it out.

A deep dark brown lager with reddish hues and a thin creamy brown head. In aroma, grassy dark malts, herb and bittter chocolate, a bit off. In mouth, a smooth chocolate, with smooth sweet nutty notes, light dry moutfeel, medium bodied. On tap at Maggies on the River, Feb. 20 2011.

12 oz. bottle. Pours dark brown with a minimal tan head. The aroma is muted, mostly coffee. The flavor is bitter throughout, with a little malty sweetness peeking in. The palate is medium-heavy, sticky and astringent, and the bitter aftertaste lingers too long. Overall, an unimpressive, flavorless beer.

Very dark brown color, thin head. Nose is empty, slightly grainy. Nice creamy texture, but weird, almost feels like nitro (this is bottled). No flavor, just some dry roast in the finish. In a blind taste I’d peg this as a crummy dry stout. Rerate:2011. Light lager with a mild roastiness and hints of coffee through the finish. Bordering on watery mouthfeel.

Deep opaque brown body, thin beige head. Nose of dark chocolate, burnt caramel, soy, and toffee, with an overall impression of toasted chocolate wafers. Body dominated by roasted malts, toast, chocolate, and sugars, like a cereal drizzled with Hershey’s syrup, yet not overly sweet. Woody finish. A pretty good beer, but nothing to howl about.
