Deep opaque brown body, thin beige head. Nose of dark chocolate, burnt caramel, soy, and toffee, with an overall impression of toasted chocolate wafers. Body dominated by roasted malts, toast, chocolate, and sugars, like a cereal drizzled with Hershey’s syrup, yet not overly sweet. Woody finish. A pretty good beer, but nothing to howl about.

Dark pour with a creamy tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, toasted, chocolate, light molasses, with some dark ripe fruit. Thin body. Flavor doesn’t stand up to it’s aroma. Weak. Light roasted malts, some molasses, toast, and some light chocolate. After that aroma I was expecting a lot more from this brew.

Got in the Winterland 12 pack. Pours a dark mahogany brown with a small beige head that retained as a thin lacing. The nose is lightly roasty, some nice coffee and minimal hops. The flavor is much the same, a bit of smoke and light hop bitterness in the sip. Finishes with a some light hopping. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. A nice creamy mouthfeel that leaves your mouth watering. Easily the best beer in the 12 pack.

Bottle. Pours almost like a thick cola. Dark brown body with reddish highlights and a finger or so of quickly dying tan head. Aromas are earthy... wet leaves, soil and a little chocolate and cola. Flavor is fairly light, but a nice mix of earthy notes (leaves, soil and nuts) with a little bit of a diet cola edge to it. Mouthfeel is light and slightly fizzy and alcohol is well hidden. It’s pretty decent, but kind of boring.

12oz bottle pours dark mahogany with minute long tan head that fades to a long lasting ring. The aroma has an initial burst of earthiness shifting into stale organic malt and chocolate as well as dusty dark roasted malts. The taste has firm earthiness mixing with dark roasted malts and lesser amounts of chocolate and faint blueberry jam. The roastiness grows into the finish as spicy hops to black licorice are noticed. Nice tasty brew.

Brune, mousse blanc-cassé. Arôme malt, grillé, café, basse-court, grains/grange avec une dominance de ce côté torréfié et grillé. Goût, malt et superbement et similaire à l’arôme: grillée avec de fine note de café. Qcq note de caramel avec une sorte de poudre de café, reste légère au palais pour 4.6%. Fini est sec et effervescent. Légère et vraiment bien fais pour la saison avec un aspect malt/grillé que j’apprécie.

Draft @ Hackney’s, Chicago, IL. Pours a dark amber/brown color with a small off-white head. Has a roasted malty caramel and chocoalte aroma. Roasted malty caramel flavor with some hints of chocolate. Has a roasted malty chocolate finish.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a slightly clear colour when held up to a light, but mostly opaque if not. Nice thick, two centimetre tall tan head on top shows nicely. Aroma of roasted malt, nuts, caramel and a touch of alcohol and pit fruits also. Lightish-bodied; Sharp pungent malt and roasty nuts in the taste with a gross medicinal light middle part of the taste that is very light-bodied and sharp pungent tasting that doesn’t mesh with the rest of the beer. Aftertaste has some of the residual ’off’ tastes with also a bit of a sweet kick, but no malt backbone, smoke or anything of substance on the back end - just bitter acidic kicks. Overall, pretty substandard - not a good beer in development or design, this didn’t have the chance at any point to be a good schwarz, let alone a solid beer in any style. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Chevy Chase Wine & Spirits in Washington, DC on 15-February-2010, sampled at home in Washington on 08-March-2010.

I would have to agree with some of the past ratings, what exactly is this beer? dark and roasted malts like a porter, but no bite like a porter, i didnt taste coffee, just sort of a caramel, buttery taste from the malts, no hop characteristics, ie bitterness, citrus, pine, etc. good beer, enjoyable, but forgettable at the end of the day
