Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a medium sized tan head. The aroma was roasty with notes of coffee, licorice, and a touch of coffee. The flavor was dry, roasty and bitter with moderate floral hops, espresso and a touch of anise. The finish was long, dry and roasty. Medium body. Decent but not my style.

Bottle from ericandersnavy. Pours pretty dark brown with a decent beige head. Aroma of smoothly toasted dark malt. Medium body with creamy carbonation. Flavor is darkly bready with some decent bitter. Quite flavorful.

So right off, it looks nice... black body, covered in a good looking brown head that dissolves into a lacing that still provides total coverage. Aroma you get all that roasted malt and dark chocolate up in your nose. Then for the taste you get some roasted malts hitting you, along with a slight amount of bitterness. Tastes almost like a porter, but feels like a lager. There is a slight (grassy) lager taste in there, but it is hard to notice. It is a good combination of porter and lager taste and feel in one beer. A good call from Magic Hat, a brewery I don’t always like.

on tap-pours a light brown head and dark brown with red color. Aroma is medium/dark malt-slightly sweet cocoa powder, earthy hops. Taste is medium/dark malt-slightly sweet cocoa powder, earthy/spice hops.

Molasses and charcoal aroma. Black pour medium tan head, decent lacing. Rich charred oak flavor with raisins at midpalate. Bark finish. Smoke notes also present. Medium body. Solid representative of the style.

Tried again 12/2510; addeda few tenths. Smells a little musty but in a dark beer attractive way. Looks dark and creamy with plenty of CO2. If adjitated pour, does have a tan head. Dark rosty flavors, at first smooth then goes toward black beer schwartz. Not bad for a so called lager. Does have the gentle attributes, lacking rude ale, that a lager should. Some licorice, some choco, some coffee. Don’t get me wrong, not like an imp stout but lets the lager lover get a feel for some the attributes in a medium sort of way. Each swig of this stuff ends with a burnt wood wet charred linger. Overall good beer experience.

Bottle as shown. Pours a very dark amber with a small frothy light tan head that diminishes quickly leaving good sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is a smokey bready malt with light roast and raisin. Thin mouthfeel with a roasted malt with coffee and chocolate with a smokey finish. Easy to drink, a good Schwarzbier from Magic Hat.

Pours black into a shaker. Off-white head quickly recedes to hug rim. Smoky caramel aromas. Dry and crisp upfront sweet dark caramel turning to a dry, lasting smoke finish.

Sampled from 12 oz bottle. Pours a deep dark color with a dark tan, almost brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, touches of sweetness in there, with a clean, fresh smell to it. Flavor is malty, though not overpowering. Sweetness is in check. Finish is quite good.

12oz bottle. Deep thick brown-amber raisin color. Solid thick beige head. Smooth sweet brown chocolate malt aroma. Medium-bodied, sweet caramel malt and a solid bitterness with just enough sandy roughness in the bitter hops. Pretty solid American Schwarzbier honestly, and I am certainly not the biggest Magic Hat enthusiast. They really did it make a nice beer here though, sessionable and rather straightforward as it is. Sweet bitter chocolate aftertaste. Right on.
