An American-Style Strong Brown Ale developed by eight Redhook brewers working in four teams of two to create one beer. The ale reflects a compilation of each team’s individual receipes that were then carefully blended into one distinct beer. 8-4-1 Expedition Ale offers complexy flavor notes, delivering malty sweetness, medium bitterness with hints of smoked flavors and oak chips balanced by the addition of honey, brown sugar and candi sugar.

Very nice ruby tinted amber coloured body with a deep brown glow and a very thin tan head. Aroma of figs, roasted malt, honey, wheat, yeast, pit fruits, raisins and a bit of spices. Medium-bodied; Assertive fruits and sweetness with a touch of honey and oak, but mainly a solid sweetness throughout. Aftertaste shows some alcohol bite and a bit of the pit fruits, but mainly a malty and oaky sweetness stay throughout. This isn’t an American Strong to me, just a simple Barley Wine. Overall, a good beer - nothing spectacular, but nothing bad at all. Nice to try! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia on 13-June-2010 sampled from home on the Eastern Shore of Virginia on 23-July-2010.

22 oz. bottle. Poured a darker amber color with a small off-white head. Aroma was caramel malts, toasted notes. Flavor was malts, tinge of oak. Pretty standard, but quite good. Alcohol pretty well masked.

Bottle at Maltzillas World Cup 2010 tasting. Pours light brown color with off white head. Aromas of lightly smoked malts, brown sugar and floral hops. Falvor is smokey with some brown sugar sweetness, chocolate, hop bitterness and booze. Medium body with lively carbonation. A decent offering from Redhook.

Bomber poured into Trappist glass. Aroma is brown sugar and cinnamon, but a little too faint. Pours a hazy reddish brown hue with a quick dissipating head and mediocre lace. Taste is malty sweet, but not overbearingly so, with just a touch of bitterness. Clove honey is apparent in the flavor. Alcoholic. Full-bodied, medium carbonation, oily. Interesting. Probably the best Redhook beer I’ve ever had.

Pours light mahogany into a trappist glass. Off-white head recedes leaving spot lacing. Honey and oak aromas. Full with upfront oak turning to brown sugar in the middle and a lasting bitter smoked resin finish.

Bomber from Malt & Vine. Pours a reddish copper with a 3 finger foamy beige head. Aromas of malt and oak with a hint of smoke. Medium body with foamy carbonation. Fairly smokey, malt is covered by bitter, not sure I get honey, but kandi could be. There is a woody astringency. Seems to be a hint of chocolate. There’s a lot going on here, and it seems to change over time. Really tasty ale. Heat is definitely not an issue. Well done.

tap @ OTH pours dark brown/mahogany with off-white head. aroma of dark fruits, dark sugar, caramel malts, the booze overpowers the aroma, rather disappointing. flavors, warming abv, thick mouthfeel of dark fruits, some bitter hops, pale and caramel malts, yeasty. dark sugar? got a bunch of dark fruits; grape, currants, and possibly hint of vanilla adding to the sweetness. I think this would be a great beer if it wasn’t that boozy.

Picked this up at Brewforia in Boise, ID. Clear mahogany color with a creamy light tan head. Woody malty aromas. Flavor was earthy and a strange sharpness. Easy on the hops but balanced in that way. Fumy in a bit of an off way. Something not quite right about it and didn’t quite get it. ABV was not very obvious and had a nice soft palate.
