Gulf Porter is the first beer of the year in our Brewer\’s Choice Series. Carefully brewed with select malts, oats, and hops. We rely on the yeast to provide the spicy note and the rich character of the beer. With warm notes of toffee, coffee, and a little chocolate this porter is a beautiful beer. Sure to spark a lively discussion on the finer points of Southern living.

Location: Draft at Closed For Business, 12/8/12

Aroma: this one has a nose of chocolate malts, light caramel, and some light nutty notes
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color, with a small tan head, and minimal lace
Flavor: The taste is fairly malty, pretty similar to the nose, with a light bitterness to it
Palate: It has a medium body, with a fairly soft carbonation, and a slightly dry finish
Overall Impression:  First Mississippi rating! Jealous Kramer? I know you are, as I ticked another state. Only 8 more to go, watch out Dakotas, I’m coming for you (or most likely not). Anyway, this beer is fine, average, and not memorable. I wasn’t all that impressed, but its fine.

growler, courtesy of cheeseman. pours light brown, thin off-white head. Aroma, toffee, light smoke and caramel. Flavors, body was rather thin for a porter, resembled more a brown. Touch of caramel malts, roasted, hints of coffee and butterscotch with a touch of bitter hops mixed with caramel in the finish.

Growler at the 2010 March Metro Detroit tasting. Poured a dark brown with a red hue with a small grayish brown head. Aroma had dark malts with some notes of dark dough and some hay. Flavor had a flavor of mainly dark malts with a touch of earthiness.

Light brown color. Aroma of unprocessed grain. Thin palate. Much more of a brown ale, and not such a bad one. But this is far too thin and light to be a porter. The Southern Pecan was a much better beer. Thanks to Skyview for Sharing this one.

growler from garmonbozia, pours dark amber with a medium light tan head. Nice roasted malt and pine hop aroma with some coffee notes. Flavor is nice and rich with coffee and chocolate notes mixed with a roasty light smoke in the finish. Really nice and rich, this is a great offering, wish it wasn’t a seasonal. Easily one of the best porters I’ve had.
