750 ml bottle into snifter; bottled in late 2014. Pours hazy dark reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of caramel, toffee, toast, raisin, fig, apple, plum, brown sugar, brown bread, light chocolate, oak, light vanilla, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and moderate barrel notes; with good strength. Taste of caramel, toffee, toast, raisin, fig, plum, apple, brown sugar, brown bread, light chocolate, oak, light vanilla, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Slight earthy tannic oak bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toffee, toast, raisin, plum, fig, apple, brown sugar, brown bread, oak, light chocolate, light vanilla, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity and robustness of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and moderate barrel flavors; with a great malt/yeast/barrel balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth and fairly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent scotch ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and cognac barrel flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
