Had this Brett-refermented tripel from draught at Brugs Bierfestival in February this year and kind of liked it, so I bought a bottle from a Delhaize supermarket for the purpose of re-rating. Thickly ’membranous’ lacing, medium thick, off-white, stable head over a pale bronze beer with deep amberish hue, lightly hazy and clearly darker than the tap version. Aroma has not changed a lot: it was Bretty from tap, and has more or less the same amount of Brett effect from a bottle, with hints of wet leather, barnyard, fermenting hay, stale armpit sweat, medium dry sherry (especially when warming up), very old white wine, oxidized red apple, sour cream and mouldy grapes, next to gooseberry, freshly cut celery, blue plum, apricot, biscuit, brandy and artisanal honey. Vividly fruity, estery onset, hints of pineapple, fresh fig, red apple and a lot of redcurrant, sourish in its core but with softening sweet aspects surrounding it, even peachy at some point, with a medium carbonation (somewhat softer than from tap, when it was rather sharp). Supple, smooth but ’full’ mouthfeel, bit soapy, established by a honeyish and lightly caramelly malt sweetness with a sharper grainy edge, numbed a bit by carbonation still going strong and adorned by persisting fruity esters; a certain amount of dryness comes in at the end, where the Brettanomyces shines, yielding certain - yet not overdone - ’animalistic’ funkiness, leathery and hayish with a relatively strong retronasal fermenting fruit factor, paired with a herbal, only gently bittering dash of tea-ish, soft hops and a subtle afterglow of whisky-like alcohol. Yeastiness in general remains subdued. The Brett presence, the one thing that makes this beer shine, is a bit more pronounced than when I had it from tap and leaves a lasting impression, but does not quite reach the level of funkiness and dryness one can find in e.g. an old Orval - the single beer that inspired a generation of amber-hued Belgian ’wild ales’ with Brett refermentation. I think this beer may become more interesting with some years of cellaring behind it; for now, the bottle seems to be still a bit too young, so that the difference with the very young rendition I had in Bruges earlier this year is not that spectacular. Whatever the case: interesting beer, when I first encountered this brewer, I was not really convinced - instead I tried to reason him into chosing another name, as confusion with the bearers of the Bon Secours brand is all around - but some of their more recent creations have managed to make me believe in their potential, regardless of their sugar-free intentions. On a side note: it is definitely interesting to see how Belgium once was the last country in the world to cultivate Brett - albeit in very specific circumstances - and with the detour of international craft brewing, came back to this region and became ’great again’...

Ambar, no mucha espuma que desaparece rápido. Turbia. Aroma de notas ácidas. Más tarde tira a madera, naranja.... En boca es interesante. Base indudable malteada, tostada. Punto ácido, pero contenido. Buen punto de gas, bien presente, realzando los sabores. Cierto tono licórico, madera. Cierta complejidad. Emplea levaduras salvajes. El resultado es muy interesante.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - BB 19/02/16, from Alko Arkadia, 20150905) The beer poured reddish brown and hazy. Its head was medium sized, frothy and nearly white. Aroma had tartness, grapefruit and yeast. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were fruitiness, tartness, yeast, malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was tart and bitter. A brew quite dominated by Brettanomyces. Not bad but lacking other components.

Bra balans, trevlig.

Bottle 330ml (Saveur)
Clear deep ruby, copper color, good cloudy off-white head, some lace. Bretta, some cellar and red currant in the nose. Medium-bodied. Berryish, even a bit sweet with wild yeast tartness. Tartness is quite soft. Otherwise suprisingly empty (for being Caulier/Proef).

Bottle @ home. Clear a bit rusty orange color, medium to full sized white head that lasts for quite a while and leaves good lacing. Aroma is lightly malts, brett, a hint of orangepeel. Tastes about the same: malts, orangepeel, brett and a touch of fruitpeel bitter. Decent body and carbonation. Not bad.
