This Special Ale is, in reality, a reconstructed exhumation of the very first ale that we ever brewed way, way back, in 1993. Brewed with a big head, a muscular malty thorax, a silky texture & all strung together with a hoppy sweet nerve sack... yum.

Pours deep copper color with tan head. Aromas of breadyl malts and pine hops. Sweet caramel malt flavor with some toffee and nuttiness with a good amount of pine hops. Medium to full body with average carbonation.

Bottle: Poured a bright amber color ale with a relatively small foamy head with average retention and not much lacing. Aroma of citrus hops is not bad but pretty standard compared to some other West Coats hop bomb. Taste is also dominated by loads of citrus and piney hops and a medium caramel malt backbone. Not the most interesting beer out there.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear amber with a small creamy off white head that leaves good sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is a sweet fruity malt with pine and light hops. Thin mouthfeel with a sweet fruit taste with a light hop and pine and nice bitter finish. Easy to drink a very good American strong ale from Lagunitas.

Really nice big and thick head. Dark amber color. Heavy malty and caramel aroma. Lots of malts in the taste, along with a nice sweetness that is counterbalanced with the hops that appear in the end. Tastes like an IPA in a way, but in another way tastes nothing like it. Smooth, but nice medium body.

Location: Updating this Rating with another 12 oz bottle from Norm's, 7/25/12

Aroma: The nose is fairly hoppy with the components being pine, resin, citrus, and caramel
Appearance: It pours a clear caramel-reddish color with a white head and mid-heavy lace
Flavor: Tastes lightly sweet up-front with the mid-heavy resin/pine hop bitterness really coming though
Palate: It is medium-full bodied, with average-plus carbonation, a thick and sticky feel, and a dry finish
Overall Impression: It has been three years since I rated this one, I figured it was due for a re-rate, plus I just like this beer. Anyway, it is pretty much as good as I remembered. This is just a great example of an Imperial Red at an always great price point. Well done here, Lagunitas. I'll have to increase my score. (8/4/9/4/16)

Location: 12 oz bottle from Norm's, 8/25/09, bottle was 7.5% ABV, 84.20 IBU

Aroma: Nice citrus hops, some pine, bready, caramel
Appearance: Clear dark reddish color, about 1 inch of off-white head that dissipates pretty quickly, some light lacing
Flavor: Malty bread taste upfront with a big citrus/pine hop finish
Palate: Medium body, nice enough mouthfeel, a bit on the oily side
Overall Impression: I tend to like these hoppy reds more then most I think, and this one is no exception, a really nicely made brew. Tasty and enjoyable, another really solid beer at a good price from Lagunitas. (8/4/8/3/16)

Bottle ca. 33cl from ΓΈlbutikken. no best before so i’ve got no idea if it is fresh or not. clear orange/red, thick small offwhite head. aroma is quite hoppy, very nicely hopped, underneath the hops i sense red fruits. marzipan, slight pine, slight flowers. supe aroma. as it warms up i get a slight dose of aged beer. flavor is hoppy, dark fruits. totally tasty and refreshing.

Pours deep mahogany red into a trappist glass. Head quickly recedes to hug rim. Brown sugar aromas. Thick upfront with sweet brown sugar and a nice resin hop finish.

bottle - Pours deep amber with a one finger light tan head. It has a rich malt aroma with some cherry notes. The flavor is of caramel malt with nice fruity hop tones. This medium bodied brew has good bitterness in the finish. Well done.

Bottle. Pours the color of a lightly tarnished penny with a minimal tan head. Dense aromas of nutty malt and slight hops dominate, but toffee and earth tones are there, too. Heavy sweetness dominates the flavor... a bit of a caramel, toffee sticky sweetness. A little bit of nut and wood are there, too. Finish is fairly sweet and sticky.
