We have made a handful of different beers to celebrate the beginning of Short’s, but this Anni Ale is our most made, most requested, and arguably our most favorite. You might read “blood orange wheatwine with peppercorns and orange zest” and be like “how the heck will that even work and what the heck will that even taste like?” and we get that. But trust us, we’ve been doing this for 21 years. Our original Short’s beers are old enough to drink themselves now! This beer is a dang delight, a real pleasure-giver full of a depth of flavor you have to experience to understand. Celebrate with us, won’t you?

12 oz. bottle, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks a lot, Dany), pours a clear ruby red with a small ring of white head. Nose brings the peppercorns upfront, with a huge body of juicy oranges and a sprinkle of coriander. Flavour is very similar, bringing out the peppercorns initially, followed by a huge backbone of juicy oranges and some moderate coriander notes. Finishes spicy (from both the peppercorns and coriander) and very juicy. Fairly light-bodied considering the ABV and style. Fun beer, though nothing overly deep and satisfying.

Nutty aroma. Clear copper, thin yellow head. Overripe orange, subtle lemongrass. Medium body, easy carbonation. Alcohol readily apparent, but easily drinkable.

I am very leery of any fruit in beer, but I love this stuff! The blood orange pops out on the palate, but quickly fades. Then the peppercorn very subtly tingles the palate; it, too, is not overdone. Doesn’t taste like any barleywine I have had . . . doesn’t taste like any other beer I have had.

Thanks to Moggman for sharing a bottle. Pours a clear orange color with a medium thin off-white head that diminishes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Fruity aroma with notes of citrus primarily, as well as some spice. Medium body with flavors of citrus, tangerine, spice and wheat. The finish is fruity with a lightly zesty citrus aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Draft at Churchkey. This was more hoppy than your usual barleywine, with decent citrus, grass and floral notes.

At Short’s Brewing Monster Tap Takeover at Churchkey. Poured a Ruby orange color with a small white head. Aroma was a touch citrus, spice notes, something familiar that I still can’t quite put my finger on - probably just the blood oranges. Beer was certainly not as hot as I would have imagined based on the ABV.

On tap at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Exotic appearance, a murky pink-orange-brown, like an offal slurry, topped by a medium head of the same, albeit lighter, color. Spicy, sweet and bitter orange flesh and rind nose. Potent body, intensely tannic and bitter with huge orange peel and orange skin notes, the tart and bitter flavors overwhelming and pummeling the palate with astringency. Some chalky yeast notes are evident in this harsh morass, but that was about all I detected. This is a serious whiff, extreme and largely unenjoyable.
