Wheatwine Ale brewed with Peppercorns, Blood Oranges, and Orange Zest.

We have made a handful of different beers to celebrate the beginning of Short’s, but this Anni Ale is our most made, most requested, and arguably our most favorite. You might read “blood orange wheatwine with peppercorns and orange zest” and be like “how the heck will that even work and what the heck will that even taste like?” and we get that. But trust us, we’ve been doing this for 21 years. Our original Short’s beers are old enough to drink themselves now! This beer is a dang delight, a real pleasure-giver full of a depth of flavor you have to experience to understand. Celebrate with us, won’t you?

On tap at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Exotic appearance, a murky pink-orange-brown, like an offal slurry, topped by a medium head of the same, albeit lighter, color. Spicy, sweet and bitter orange flesh and rind nose. Potent body, intensely tannic and bitter with huge orange peel and orange skin notes, the tart and bitter flavors overwhelming and pummeling the palate with astringency. Some chalky yeast notes are evident in this harsh morass, but that was about all I detected. This is a serious whiff, extreme and largely unenjoyable.

12oz bottle pours a hazy, orange red with zero head. Smells like hand soap, oranges, rose wine, flowers. Flavor is bitter oranges, soapy, white port. Finish is bitter and astringent. Kind of gross.

Bottle thanks to jdubfl: Poured a reddish color with light off white head. Aroma is a mix of citrus fruit, spice, and hops. Taste is very acidic with citrus fruit which gives it a very hop bitterer effect.

Bottle thanks to badnewsbeers. Pours with a hazy but vibrant blood orange juice colored body and a thin off-white head that recedes. Aroma of grapefruit, orange, citrus zest, red wine, pepper, vanilla, esters, yogurt. Taste is citrus, light acidity (not infection or wild bugs), orange, pepper, earth, light cedar in the finish. Finishes pretty dry and sort of earthy. Lasting cigar box flavor. Some bitterness (seems more spiced based tannins than hop bitterness for some reason). A very different beer. Medium amount of tingly bubbles. Very dry for a barley/wheat wine.

Shared by Sleestack on the RBSG Friday Bus. Thanks, Man! This is great. Beautiful orange-brown color with just a little lace. Huge, spicy, pepper and orange aroma with wheat. It’s tart, with great orange. You can really taste the pepper. Smooth, a beautiful beer. Love it!

12 ounce bottle shared at RBSG by sleestak. Thanks! Pours a lightly hazy copper color with a thin head. Decent head retention and lacing. Spicy, peppery aroma deep orange notes, other citrus and toffee. The taste is big spicy pepper notes, tart orange notes and faint caramel. Medium-full bodied. A bit too tart but still quite nice.

On tap at MBGSF 2010. Pours copper with an off-white head. Aroma is heavy on citrus and pine, seemingly from both hops and herbs. Flavor is again heavily citrusy, combining lemon zest and grapefruit, orange, pine, perhaps juniper berry? Bittersweet.

Courtesy of jdubFL, wow! thanks Justin! Growler poured out clear copper with thin off white head. The aroma is IIPA like with fresh rich citrus, pine and grassiness and then a mild malt like sweetness. The taste is yummy with fresh rich citrus flavors, some pine hop bitterness, spicy rye notes, some drying malt roastiness and a thin layer of sweet maltiness. These notes all head off into the finish with the addition of a pleasing black tea like sensation that brings the whole thing together. This beers is fresh, rich citrus, robust, pummeling hops and yet manages to create a semblance of balance too. Wow! I need a keg or two of this.

growler courtesy shared by Jdubfl. pours amber, tan head, told it was a wheat wine, not sure about the barley wine. aroma, tart and fruity, some grains? and yeasty. flavors, malty, plenty of pinety hops, drinks like a soapy boozy DIPA with lots of hop flavors. Hints of honey like sweetness, fizzy citrus/tangy finish.
